I read a great article on that the other day, I'll post it when I get home. The point is, if there's a big act playing and a local band isn't given the chance, it's most likely not the fault of the person booking the show.
Well those things are decided by the agencies most of the time.
But local bands not being given the chance to open for bigger acts ultimately hurts the local music scene.

I don't disagree.
But sometimes the blame for that ultimately lies with the headlining band. Although the bands they pick to open are often great lesser-known bands who probably deserve the exposure whether they're local or not.

And then sometimes the band they have with them on tour is absolutely terrible. But they are on tour with them because of record company or management.

Sometimes, but that's rare. Usually it's booking agents and management companies/labels placing bands on certain tours

I guess it depends. 90% of the bands I hang out with book their own opening acts. I guess TX Country is different.
For the record, I'm not trying to argue with you at all. My experience has just, for the most part, been different
And of COURSE it depends on the caliber/popularity of the band and/or label.

Quick search on phantasytour.com showed Pi Day, 3/14/07. Wasn't here for it, but I don't know if they would come back unless they were doing a Campus Tour of the South. They are either playing much bigger venues than The Varsity now or it would have to be a case like Willie Nelson (somewhere between $50-60 a ticket). Yonder and Umphrey's is about the right level for the Varsity in terms of making their money back, providing they sell out the show.
Thoughts?

Doc ... you seem to know a lot about the varsity goings on and the local scene, but you don't know everything
Baton Rouge could certainly support another venue as Chelsea's is doing less music and lets' face it is primarily a bar/rest.
the moon has plenty of it's own dance nights and the talent buyer is on the road with the Givers half the time
there isn't a room that really taps into the lafayette scene, the diverse NOLA scene (Rebirth once a year doesn't cut it) or singer songwriters. Hell, the red dragon on Florida in the real hood sells out some shows.
BR needs an interesting small room with a consistent schedule and nice bar atmosphere like the blue moon, the den in NOLA etc, the legendary Bayou. There was a time when the Bayou, Chelseas, Moon, Varsity, and Thirsty Tiger were all pulling together for a nice scene. Five rooms is the right amount

Fact is, it's not the venues that are the problems.. Even if you give people the "perfect" venue (whatever that is) they still have to show up to it.
The varsity, Chelsea's, spanish moon, Hartley vey, manship, north gate, redstar, mellow mushroom, roux house, game day daiquiris, the new caterie, AND another venue?
That's 12 venues right there that do live music.
I don't know that BR needs another one. I just see it failing. I could be wrong.

you forgot the river center. i think a venue would be good right next to campus if it was small. many venues seem to thrive in athens.

Way too big of a draw for the Varsity. Every time that I've seen them outside of local, hard-to-get-into shows in Texas, the crowd has been several THOUSANDS strong.
...All the others could probably do very well (crowd-wise) at the Varsity. I don't foresee Michael Franti playing there though considering he's gotten use to the big stages. Ben Harper should be happy with having a stage to play on; same with 311.
