Funny that some caller on WWL yesterday afternoon had this same rumor. Coincidence? I think not. Brees is still associated with the NFL and would not be able to have any contact with Payton. Just like Payton wouldn't be able to communicate with a 3rd party who would then relay info to the saints. This is just dumb.

I posted this in another thread but I talked to a guy very, very close to Brees over the weekend. I told him the first thing I do when I wake up every morning is to check to see if he is signed and his reply as "You won't have to check for a while, it's not close to being done."
And like others have said, even though Brees is not technically under contract, it's been well reported that he still can't communicate with Payton.

Contract or no contract Brees cannot talk to Sean Payton. Sean is restricted from talking to anyone related to the NFL until his suspension is lifted. Your little rumor reeks of troll and stupidity.

He can talk to Benson about non-football related things, but he must report the contact to the NFL, and he under most circumstances will have the Saints lawyer present for any such conversation.
