ok, so where would you recommend getting certified?
where are some good spots to scuba dive? ill be in NOLA.. so i thought florida was the closest good spot?
i have a mask i have used for snorkeling, would that work for scuba or should i invest in a new mask?
would it be smart to buy my own flippers, BCD, and regulator? or just rent them whenever i go?

My buddy teaches at Underwater Adventures so I'd recommend them. But in NOLA you have Harry's Dive Shop and Coral Reef

I always dive the rigs out of Venice and Fourchon. Never go to Florida. Prettier here and more fish but inherently more dangerous.

I own all my hear but I also dive 50x a year so it all depends on frequency and location.

how is it more dangerous?

I do not. I rely on invites as of now.

It's more dangerous because of the currents from the Mississippi and all. Also and most importantly you have structure above you must be aware of at all times.

i did it in the bahamas, got "democrat" certified in a pool and dove down 20 feet, but i would like to be able to go deeper

I got certified at Underwater. Good shop and I have nothing bad to say about them what so ever, but you will pay at least 2x as much to do it in BR as opposed to somewhere with more competition like Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Pensacola, etc. All shops around here are ridiculously expensive. Personally, if I had to do it all over again I would not do it in BR. Saving over $500 and doing it in a long weekend on the coast with an online course is the way to go in my opinion.

Just wanted to give you all the information. I didn't know enough when I did it and sent my friend this route. He got a much better deal and a one on one check out dive with great instruction. I'm setting up a trip for a open water certification for my BIL soon. I can give you details on the shop and all if you post your email.

I was certified through Underwater Adventures as well way back when. I also went to high school with the owner of Seven Seas which is right off of Essen at I-10. My 2 brothers were Certified at Seven Seas. The prices of the classes are pretty similar I believe, This is Seven Seas
You are going to want good gear, not Walmart mask and fins. Not saying that's what you have but cheap is not the way to go when your life depends on it.

Don't let mylsuhat's rig-diving snobbery mislead you. There is a lot of good diving in the Florida panhandle area. When I say "good", it's kinda relative though. Good given the relatively close proximity and lower cost, but not Roatan or Belize. I've gone as far west as Pensacola and east to Panama City. Gulfshores, Alabama is probably good, but I've never been.

There are a lot of good wreck sites and other structures, jetties, and, inland, some freshwater springs.

Of course, the big Kahuna is now the Oriskany in Pensacola, an aircraft carrier sunk in 2006.

so my question is what are some hobbies i can get into down here involving the outdoors. i have never been hunting, i like deep sea fishing but i only have a sail boat so it would be a challenge.
what im really looking into is scuba diving,
Scuba is alot of fun, but I usually just add it to my vacations.
I don't really consider it to be a daily/monthly/weekend hobby.
Once you're certified, you can pretty much go anytime, any where. Basic certification is ok, but advanced+Nitrox is better. Spearfishing can become addicting, much like saltwater or freshwater fishing. So, if you go that route. It could become a full-time hobby.

As far as other things you can do in louisiana involving the outdoors, the options are pretty much unlimited with our mild winters.

Some quick examples are:
Duck hunting
Deer hunting: bow or rifle
Small game hunting
Salt water fish
Fresh water fish
Skiing or Wakeboarding
Pick up a sport: tennis, golf, other
Camping
Biking
Motorsports
Season tickets to college atheltics (with tons of drinking)

Usually people around here pick 3-4 hobbies for each part of the year, which consume their time.
For me:
Fall - Golf/ LSU football
Winter - Hunting/ Saltwater fishing
Spring - Golf/ LSU baseball/ Camping/ Water-sports
Summer - Golf/ Volleyball/ Water-sports/ Fishing

isnt nitrox certification for diving past 100 feet? is that something you get certified in right away? i dont think i would be comfortable with doing nitrox certification any time soon, i thought they made you do like 50 dives before you can do nitrox certification?

also is spearfishing something you need to be certified in? or is that a "hands on" learning experience?
