Avengers is overrated - don't buy into the hype (spoiler-ish kinda)

I cannot comprehend the praise it's receiving. There was absolutely no character development, no interesting dialogue, the action was constant and boring, the pay-off was underwhelming, the villain is one of the worst I've ever seen, the narrative structure was laughable, the pace and the message was way off... I could go on.
It's just explosion after explosion after boring dialogue scene after boring dialogue scene...
The action in the third act was very well made, but there was never any sense of danger. It never felt like any of the main characters or the innocent bystanders could have even gotten hurt. And because the rest of the movie didn't spend too much time building up any relationship of actual friendship between any the 4 main Avengers, seeing them all fighting together in the last 20 minutes didn't have that much emotional weight. Sure, it was really cool seeing all those different superheroes fighting alongside each other, but it wasn't very engaging.
Yeah, the CGI was spectacular, but that alone isn't enough to garner excessive praise from every human on the planet (see Transformers).
Not to mention the plot's macguffin (blue cube), they never bothered to explain in detail exactly what it was, or how Azgard came about obtaining it, or why it was dangerous, or what power it held and why Loki wanted to destroy it so badly.
Perhaps I bought into the hype, but this movie is basically Rise of The Silver Surfer with better special effects.
And for people comparing this and saying it's better than The Dark Knight, you guys have fallen and bumped your head! The only thing this film can hold over TDK's head is the CGI (and only because it had more epic action sequences than TDK). That's IT!
So don't buy into the hype, unless you're a fanboy and are just nutting in your pants to see a live action movie containing of all your superheros in one. Otherwise, this film will be a huge disappointment to you, as it was me.
inb4csb, IDAF, etc. etc. etc.

I wrote a prediction on this board about The Avengers and the future of super hero movies in Hollywood. Let's see how it all plays out.

I just finished watching it. Its a fun popcorn flick. But this just felt like another origin story connecting other origin stories. It's not very plot heavy if at all. But then again none of the characters movies were either. It is what it is. It will make a ton of money cause it's aimed at kids like all movies this time of year. I definitely think this is being over hyped. But with all the money spent on this film, and setting up the characters in the other films it has to be over hyped to attempt to make their money back. There will be a lot better films this summer by far, but anyone expecting anything other than explosions and arse kickings is kidding themselves.

Isnt that the whole point of a macguffin?

I completely disagree with almost everything you said.

I don't disagree with the arguments he made about Loki and the fact that the heroes never seemed to be in any danger. Loki was a very weak villain and when it came down to the climax of the film the heroes owned an entire army that was thousands of times their numbers. There was never any sense of danger, never any suspense. Still...it was a good popcorn flick but I would have to rate it behind Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man as far as "Best Marvel Movie" is concerned.

Without going into spoilers, I think there was clearly some human risk, but the film didn't really dwell on it beyond a couple of quick lines. Hypothetically, if a big building in a crowded city falls over, you kind of have to make some assumptions.
But it's a fantasy. Does anyone ever really expect the superheroes to lose? The story is always about how they overcome, not if they will. The Avenges is a good popcorn movie, not a mind-altering experience.
Agree about the cube. I kept trying to remember if that was ever explained better in Captain America. I only had a vague idea of what that was from reading comic books as a kid.

Ehh, I never thought while watching "god this dudes a weak villain" he was ok.

Because the Avengers are that bad arse.
The one problem I had with the movie, and I've never read any of the comics so I don't know that much about the heros, but every movie I've seen the Hulk in every time that he transforms he's like an uncontollable freight train. So how the hell was he able to take orders and shite at the end?

Is that not what all the previous movies were for??

They told you what the message was suppose to be and then missed it? OK

in a movie with 5 main characters, all of whom had their own origin movies? NO WAI?!

If this dude is complaining about character development, I'm going to assume the rest of the review is equally as idiotic.

Wasn't this kind of the point in the previous individual character movies?

No, they really aren't.

That's fine, but then you need a villain/threat big enough to carry the movie and Loki's army just wasn't able to do it. Loki was a weak villain and you never get the sense that his army is full of badasses. They're basically filler.

Naaaa. There's always a good balance here.
In fact, I often find myself defending Micheal bay on here.

Expectations not of a comic book origin.
Look comic books started with:
Evil villains has crazy world domination plans
Evil villain has army of ridiculously costumed weaklings to attack said heroes.
Evil villain might engage in combat to which he loses, but does not die and replies...
"I'll get you next time <INSERT TEAM HERE>. You and your little dog too!"
Rinse and repeat.
I haven't seen it yet, but given Whedon's influence, this is mostly to set up the inter-team politics and relationships, then allow for a much bigger story to be told (Hello Infinity Gauntlet, we already saw it in Thor). I also have my thoughts about the army this time around, which begs two other questions, for much bigger and more threatening stories.

I watched it over the weekend and the only problem I had was Cap's ghey helmet (they could have darkened the blue in his outfit a bit as well).
This movie was never billed as being Game of Thrones in tights, nor has it ever been claimed that it would frick with your mind like Inception. Of course you are going to find a truckload of failure if you are looking for anything more than a really good action movie.
I can't wait to see it and the "puny gods" on an IMAX screen
