Because government money is usually funneled to liberal areas to appease the base. In this way, the conservatives usually fix fiscal problems before they hire union street cleaners, build a park and fund an art wall. Also all city improvements are regulated by the government instead of private sector so those cities just dip into the bottomless budget unlike a private corp that must pay attention to bottom lines. So usually conservatives are fighting an uphill battle to get the government out of our pockets, but trying to argue with geniuses like the OP that say, "BUT WOW these cities are SOOOOO PRETTY so the libs MUST be doing it right" (while the state and local budgets look like a crime scene).

Definitely. Again, it's not about being liberal or conservative, it's about being smart. e.g. Louisiana struggles partly because we don't place the kind of value on education that other areas do. I'm not really sure that you can blame one side or the other for that.

Liberals seem to embrace smart growth, city planning, anti-sprawl measures, etc. But there are exceptions like Los Angeles.
The boom that made Los Angeles could never have been planned for. BTW, Los Angeles was much more conservative and became more liberal as the years went by. Even when I first moved here it was much more conservative.

Despite the budget problems in areas like Cali, they're still much better off than we are. It's nice that Louisiana's budget is balanced. It's not so nice that people in California make twice as much $ as us.

True, but you have to consider the cost of living.

cost of living... probably partially due to taxation. so it is relative. Try and be a private land owner in San Fran. 900 Sq Ft costs in excess of $600,000 in livable areas.

Never spent any time in Portland but I agree that Seattle is a friendly city. Then again, I find most places to be friendly. I tend to look for the good and strike up conversations with people everywhere I've gone. I kinda sense that you are that way as well.

Oh wait, there are some cities, especially one, in a certain state but that's due to my disdain for pure, unadulterated evil.

Those cities became great before they became liberal. Look a T Detroit. Btw, I think the city management is in Singapore.

both san fran and chicago are broke, so i wouldnt call them "nice".
California and Illinois get back 75 cents for every dollar they sent to the US treasury. Louisiana gets back about $1.50. Chicago and SF/SJ are supporting Louisiana.

also should be noted that actual "liberals" from say, california, are shocked at how conservative Austin really is.
I've met some of them! "We thought this place was supposed to be progressive" I was like "Dude, it's still in TX. This place is liberal FOR TEXAS!" They are planning to move to Colorado.

Typical. They run a place into the ground and now they're fleeing.

But in any of the big cities where you would want to live your increase in salary would be completely engulfed by real estate costs. Try looking at the difference in home prices between Baton Rouge and Los Angeles and you tell me which city you will struggle in more financially.

No, but I have done so in NYC I know they have their problems, I just pointing out that there are more opportunities over there. Although they're leaving for TX as we speak.
