They were pulling good recruits to UNT lately. Their freshman class this last year...
- Tony Mitchell obviously was a huge one
- Chris Jones had offers from Colorado, Houston, New Mexico, TCU and about 10 or so others including a few MVC teams
- Trey Norris had a Minnesota offer and about 7-8 other offers
- Forrest Robinson had offers from Arkansas, Houston, Iowa state, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, USC, Utah and a few others
- Jordan Williams had offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Fresno State, UGA, Houston, KSU, Marquette, OK St, Oregon, So Miss, Texas Tech and some mids
Obviously they did a REALLY great job recruiting all that Dallas-FW area talent, and that was from 1 year.
Mitchel isn't Forrest's recruit. Mitchell ended up at UNT because he had to pay all of his tuition and fees because he was not on scholarship and his mother lives in DFW. Combine that with less stringent academic polices as a non-scholarship player and UNT was for the most part his only option.
Forrestt can recruit with the best of them, but before this last class he has not been the monster in the DFW area everybody proclaims. UNT's success has been on the back of transfers and last years class can be heavily attributed to kids coming to play with Mitchell. I like the guy, but he is not the magical snake oil salesman that everyone is trying to say he is.

Here we go. Mitchell didn't come to UNT until late as he was waiting on NCAA and Mizzou to finish and rule on appeal Mizzou had filed. Jordan Williams was UNT's first early recruit. After Mitchell, Rodger Franklin transferred from OSU because his dad lives in Dallas and has brain tumor. Even later Juston Patton, Grambling transfer. Patton had to sit out this year unexpectedly due to transfer issues.
NCAA granted a hardship waiver to Franklin to play at UNT last year. Mitchell could have played anywhere, but choose UNT because JJ and staff recruited him when he decided on Mizzou (we were within his top 3 choices). Since we recruited him he knew our coaches and he and his HS coach over the years had seen the improvement in UNT BB JJ was responsible for.
UNT didn't make March Madness because Chris Jones, and Jordon Williams didn't make they're grades first semester and were academically ineligible to play. If these players were eligible to pay we would have walked through SunBelt play and Danced. The year before our time was riddled with injuries and our team was loaded with seniors, so that year was a disappointment.
Point is JJ and staff will make LSU's talent at what ever level play above expectations. JJ will always have your team peak at SEC tournament time. JJ and his staff can recruit, bank it, and with a school to promote y'all will be fine shape, sooner rather than later.
The LSU nation can be as skeptical as y'all need to be, but JJ will succeed and surprise a lot of LSU faithful. Just don't want to many honest, honorable LSU faithful to have to post "humble pie" and it's time to "eat crow" messages on tigerdroppings, because JJ will turn all of the nay sayers, and skeptics into believers, it just a matter of time. Hopefully all of LSU's doubters, skeptics, and nay sayers will man up and post their apologies at the appropriate time.

Gee, that diatribe sounds like one of boxcar's posts in which he tells us his son is Tebow II. And I believed your post about as much as I did his.

Shawn Forrest official to LSU as basketball assistant
I'm a bit underwhelmed, but so then was I with the head coach hire, but I'm gonna give the good ole' boys a chance.
Not sure if the Livingston thing was ever more than a figment of LSU fan's imaginations, but one thing that struck me about that is that one of the main selling points for Jones from many was that he would bring in Livingston (who by the way has never coached or recruited at the college level...any level).
That in and of itself kind of puts it in perspective.
But Hey, they did get that Mitchell kid to go to UNT some kind of way. And that kid could play anywhere. Now how they got him there.....?

The kid originally signed with Missouri, but did not qualify

To me, Jones needs to have at least one person connected with LSU on this staff to complete this heartwarming transition. Randy Livingston would perfect it!

I think he'd definitely help Hickey. But it's obvious at this point it ain't gonna happen.

The reason there has been no official release from LSU is that Shawn Forrest is technically still a finalist for the UNT job. Most think he is a longshot, but don't expect an announcement until they either make a hire or rule him out.

Shawn Forrest helped Johnny Jones build a great program -- not to mention a great roster for next season. Everyone gets a break sooner or later in their careers. This could be Forrest's time.

The huge concern with having an assisstant with connections to Louisiana is retarded. That's why we hired Johnny Jones.
This was a good argument when TJ was here. Not so much anymore. Jones is all we need to secure the top talent in Louisiana. Better to have some guys with connections to
Texas, Mississippi, etc.

He can be our Pacific time zone private school white kid recruiting coordinator. It's an untapped market.
