Obama tried. But once it was clear what he was dealing with, the loony tea naggers in the House who wanted the country to default, he wisely decided to wait.
As the late great Christopher Hitchens said, he's never seen a less serious group of elected leaders.

Question for you since you recognize that tax increases won't solve the deficit problems, what cuts in spending has Obama proposed to address the problem from the other side? Please point out in any of the budgets Obama has submitted to Congress the substantial cuts in spending that will lead to a balanced budget.
Republicans are not about to vote for a tax increase without substantial cuts in spending to accompany the tax increase. They've learned the lesson that Republicans who agree to tax increases now for spending cuts later never see the spending cuts. You can go back to Reagan agreeing to sign TEFRA, which increased taxes but not tax rates by reducing deductions for things like depreciation, after Democrats promised to cut spending to deal with a budget crisis. After they got their tax increase Democrats increased spending rather than make cuts that they promised.

I would have loved to have been in the room with Obama and Boehner when they were discussing the "big" plan.
We're going to have to cut in many places. We should have been asked to sacrifice when we invaded Iraq. It's time to pay the bill.
