That there aren't varying degrees?

there are certainly varying degrees

but we don't know if pickling is actually more harmful than using certain chemicals in processing

sure, we THINK chemicals are bad and pickling is natural and has lasted the test of time, but that's just accepting old wives tales, imho

So? Are you suggested that's not a relative term? That there aren't varying degrees? I'd argue that each polar end of the "processed" spectrum are rather far apart with many levels in between.

Sure. But it's silly to talk about processed foods and then argue over what sausage tastes better.

re: Anyone think some people take food maybe a little too seriously here?

Wow, this topic has blossomed. Yes, we take food seriously, but there is good reason.

Please, maybe we need to define some terms:

Processed, yes technically, unless to eat your meat off the hoof like a lion, or eat your veggies right out of your own garden, it's 'processed'. When I say processed food I mean stuff like Velveeta, where they take a product like cheese and process it into something else, or fat free Half & Half. I'm not being elitist, if you like Velveeta, eat what you want, I'm not looking down my blood-shot old nose, but I don't care for stuff like that.

I am alarmed by processed food because of the eyeball test, I have seen how young girls are maturing much younger than they did when I was a teen. Some experts say its the higher fat in the diets, some say it is the hormones in the milk and fed to animals we eat. I don't know, but when my granddaughters visit I try to feed them food free of these things. There mother does the same at home.

Preservatives. Yes, salt is a preservative, so is pepper, so is potassium nitrate that has been used for centuries, then there is the unpronounceable crap they load in everything else. The less you consume of these products the better off you are.

Over the last few years I done whatever feasible to reduce the suspect products from the diet of my family and friends. I bake my breads, grow what I can, cure my own hams, stuff sausage. I am surprised how little time it takes and how much money it saves, sometimes enough to pay for the more expensive 'organic' products I cannot produce on my own.

I'm glad a lot of people on this board take food 'too' seriously, I learn a lot from them.

What's your take on the high end dining 'molecular gastronomy' movement?

Here's my short answer: I'll sacrifice taste (however negligible) to know that I'm not putting unnatural shite in my body.

quote:

as has been shown countless times in general, though, when you THINK you're eating "better" food, you're going to THINK it tastes better. now, how that food is "better" varies. for some it's price. for some it's perceived freshness. for some it's organic. study after study shows that taste is LARGELY a function of stuff having nothing to do with what you're putting in your mouth

Listen, I've had many Double Quarter-Pounders w/ Cheese in my day.. and I have no problem admitting that they are rather delicious. The reason I haven't eaten one in more than 3 years is because the facts are there.. it's made from absolute shite ingredients that are terrible for you.

quote:

any legit links to studies on this?

there seems to be a lot of bark and inconsistent data on this point. organic and inorganic foods both seem to have positives and negatives, health-wise

I've never read a study on either side that I found to be 90+% reliable.. but there are more convincing arguments for factory farming being bad for humans than against.

Also, it should be pointed out that it's not just chemically engineered and unnatural hormones that we should worry about, it's also natural hormones that can be harmful if animals are not used properly. For instance, this study shows how milking farm-raised cows at the wrong time leads to a high risk of cancer due to high levels of estrogen.

Harvard study.

This is nothing more than the illusion created by changes in clothing styles, makeup, etc.

Does tobacco not come from the earth? I smoke additive-free cigarettes.

And this thread is about food, Gris. I also drink beer and alcohol. Which I would argue drinking + smoking is less harmful than eating some of the shite Americans put in their stomachs every day.

Everything comes from the earth, including MSG and all of your unpronounceable preservatives. We don't have mines on fricking Mars right? And your taste buds have been damaged by smoking. Fact.

No, is it a concern to the medical community, the average age of the onset of puberty is going down, I think the food may be the reason.

do you also proclaim negatives in food when we discuss how we're a lot taller and live longer, too?

yeah, shite is likely changing, but that doesn't mean it's BAD

quote:

salt is a preservative, so is pepper, so is potassium nitrate that has been used for centuries,

just because it's been used for centuries doesn't mean it's better. people did/used a lot of shite centuries ago that we wouldn't dream of doing/using today

The less you consume of these products the better off you are.

maybe. maybe not.

You'd have to have a really poor diet for it to be worse than copious amounts of smoking and drinking combined.

Yeah, you've got to really be kidding yourself if you think drinking to excess and pack-a-day type smoking is better for you than pretty much ANY sort of "processed" food I could come up with.

Yeah you're right, a squash grown in your backyard is the exact same as the unpronounceable ingredients on the back of a box of Twinkies.

No shite. Don't see how that's relevant though.

There certainly are some worked-up Applebee's eaters up in here who call out people for being snobby about food even if it means painting with a broad brush or putting words in their mouth.

SFP, yes you are right, everything I say is personal opinion and personal preference, I am not a researcher, I have no degrees in organic chemistry, I think 95% of what is sold in 'health food stores' and GNC are placebos.

But, I have been watching the food we eat evolve tremendously over the last 60+ years, I think some is good, I think a lot of it is crap. My opinion.

The good news is I bake my own bread, it is an all natural product, it costs 1/3 of store bought, the bad news is it tastes so damn good I eat too much of it and gain weight. So what is healthier, eating less of the store bought, or more the homemade?

Wait, who is painting with a broad brush here besides you?

The fact that you probably can't taste the difference between fresh and frozen tuna goes a long way towards the credibility of your overly critical rants on a FOOD board.
