And you would be wrong. Determining what is good and not good based upon majority opinions is subjective. Hitler was immensely popular.

Certainly not by quoting Soundscan and Billboard Top 100 Lists.

I'm still waiting. BTW, some revisionists asserted that Shakespeare did not exist. He was a group of female authors.

currently reading two from the science fiction of Doris Lessing, Nobel prize winner (and author of a 1970's feminist favorite The Golden Notebook, which I have never read). My personal favorite from her political genre material: the Good Terrorist. This is an all-time "cautionary tale" from her material on human relationships: Briefing, for a Descent into Hell.

Soundscan? Did they replace Cashbox?

His thesis is that women can't produce good literature. Then he cooks his data to fit his thesis by dismissing every female author as "sucks". That "logic" is so pathetic he'd get laughed out of a middle school English class.

His point seems to have been from the beginning to act like a doofus... or at some point, he switched gears from trying to make some inane point to adopting the persona of a doofus. Either way, I'm out.

Anne Rice? I read half a book...it sucked ETA: buy it was just something I bought at the Airport before a flight, and happened to be part 2 of the Mayfair witch series "Lasher" Found her flow and pacing to be quite annoying. Also I am quite positive that everyone in the thread has read more books than I have. Reading sucks, completely inefficient. Zach, you want to talk about Music? How many women's songs aren't about Love or Relationships? Men have bands that rarely mention either, but I got to thinking the other day, and could barely name 5 songs all-time made by women that aren't about love or relationships. I'll take it to the music board

So, I'm reading your replies and basically the game you want to play is "I like these male authors and I chanllenge you to find female authors that I might like, but they have to have published more than one book." Is that about the gist of it? People have different taste in literature. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it crap. Lots of people like Hemingway and I can't stand his writing style. Doesn't take away his accomplishments in literature

Good example. I like Hemingway. I wouldn't read Dickens if I didn't have to. Doesn't mean anything other than my own tastes.

I have reason to doubt your ability to adequately judge literary proficiency. I'll throw in Jane Austen though. She's a witty writer.

I use the library. She has written in a few genres. She's really unique that way. The Good Terrorist is not the least bit wordy. Its a peek into the interactions of a motley collection of resisters, including professional commies, and IRA types. Its quite sparse actually and so is Briefing for a Descent into hell, quite simple and sparse. However, her science fiction is DENSE. And did you get Prometheus Rising yet? Its $12 on Amazon and you will thank me the rest of your days. Lessing is merely an excellent fiction writer. Prometheus Rising , which you said you were going to check out, is a game changer.

Everyone is missing my point. It's a shame. I can't stand Hemingway. I know he's supposed to be great. I hate LOTS of male authors. My point is that when discussing the great authors we have read in our lives they are so male dominated that ya gotta dig really deep into your memory or do some net research to come up with a list any female authors that would make the top 100 on a list including males. Thus, my point about quotas in history books. Post modernism has injected race and gender into every field of study. Hell, I've read papers that said MATH is a racist construct of white males designed to suppress women and minorities. I like Camille Paglia and Michelle Malkin. By far the worst writer I've ever seen published is a local Shreveport Times writer named Judy Pace Christie. Her weekly column is about "How you need to step back and re-prioritize". She expands that simple sentence into 200 words that have no meaning. Then she recopies each column adjusting a few words. And, if you really want to see some painful writing, go back to the archives of Clinton's first term and read Hillary's "Talking it Over" column. It was a weekly and almost impossible to read without throwing up. "Goodness is better than badness. We should be good."

Yeah, but I love female voices. Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Judy Collins. A bunch of female front singers for rock bands. Bob Dylan was a great writer but when he sang it came out like "uhhhhh.'

I already answered but maybe you missed the post. Prometheus reviews panned it due to excess verbiage so I'm hesitant to buy. I like concise. BTW, that reminds me. In terms of word economy my favorite female author is Ann Coulter. She packs more message into a 10 word sentence than anyone I've ever read.
