re: Pro sports franchises that failed to win anything despite having elite talent

The '96 Braves were probably the best team in baseball the year they lost to the Yankees in the World Series.

fricking Jim Leyritz.

Last season's Washington Capitals. The 1997 Baltimore Orioles. The 2011 LSU Tigers.

fricking 1-3-1. That should be illegal.

Cubs, the year that the Mets with Seaver, Koosman and Nolan Ryan in the pen, took the Orioles in 4 straight.

those Cubs had some All Star hitters and Ferguson Jenkins. they did not have a back up centerfielder, and when the starter went down right before the series with the Mets, the season went down the drain.

re: Pro sports franchises that failed to win anything despite having elite talent

It's been a bad sports year for me. I've watched three different teams I root for lose in a title game or series AS THE FAVORITE (LSU, Texas Rangers, Maryland lax). Throw in the Caps annual choke job and the NCAA committee screwing over LSU baseball last year, this is possibly the worst sports year of my life.

LSU-Bam
Toronto FC-Mexican side
Glasgow Rangers-docked ten points receivership
Toronto Maple Leafs-Looked good for the playoffs then lost like 17 of 20
Saints-lose to 49ers then to Commish
Lost my Louisiana Grandfather/mentor a month ago.
This has WAD been the worst sports year, ever.

'94 Expos?

"In 1994, the Expos team — and Larry Walker — appeared to be rising to its potential. Led by rising young stars Pedro Martínez, Moisés Alou, Cliff Floyd, Mike Lansing and Jeff Fassero, Montreal was off to a 74-40 start, leading the National League Eastern Division. They had scored 585 runs (5.13 per game) and allowed 454 runs (3.98 per game) through 114 games by Friday, August 12.[4]

Walker, with 86 RBI, was well on his way to his first 100-RBI year; Ken Hill was on pace to win 23 games while Pedro Martinez was on pace to strike out more than 200 batters. Moisés Alou was hitting .339 and on pace to collect more than 200 hits for the first time in his career. Marquis Grissom was on pace to score 137 runs. Two other Expos, namely Alou and Walker, were also on pace to score more than 100 runs. The team was also drawing well at home: through 52 home games in 1994, 1,276,250 fans had attended Expos games, for an average of 24,543 per game. At that pace, the Expos would have had a good chance of drawing two million fans for the first time since 1983.[5] The season, however, was stopped due to the 1994 players' strike. The World Series, for which the Expos appeared to be destined, was never played and Montreal lost many of its players during the next season due to free agency and salary constraints and the team never recovered. The 1994 Montreal Expos team that could have been remains one of baseball's hot discussion points. The collapse of the Expos would eventually lead to the team moving to Washington D.C. ten years later."

2001 Mariners are the greatest regular season team of all time and got beat by an immensely inferior Yankee team

Also I don't know if anyone has said it but how about the Blues the year they had Gretzky to go along with Pronger, Hull and Fuhr.

I know the Lakers have won a shit-load of championships. But what about the 2004 team that had 4 future hall of famers. Shaq, Kobe, Malone, and Payton. I know they made it to the championship that year and lost to Detroit 4 games to 1, but I always thought it was absurd that they even lost that year.

My favorite team to win a championship that I had no rooting interest in. That Detroit team balled out of its mind and made the lake show just quit.
