Totally agree, we had that sandwich in the last six months, it very mediocre at best, more like a bad grocery store version of a poboy.

Used to eat at Sammy's due to proxy of Magnolia Wood residence, and it was once much better in the late 1990s and early 2000s, than it's now's diluted multi-franchise efforts of sheering the BR sheep, that happily stand and wait outside it's doors in 100* heat for a table of fried greasy food..

I now much prefer Parrain's, J Alexander,etc..

I lived two blocks awau from sammys for two years and only went during crawfish season and occasionally sunday breakfast to go.

Coaches plate and boiled crawfish makes a legit meal.

If I had to rank them, I'd say Chimes>>>Sammys>>>George's.

The fried cheesesticks were good, I give them that. Wife said her crawfish were tasty, but not the best. Poboy wasn't good; our server sucked.

Also-- I swear there were 20+ female waitresses there, most of whom were just standing around, gossiping. That place is seriously overstaffed.

Haven't been since I was a student about 5 years ago (can't believe it's been that long), but Sammy's was always a great place to go for affordable, decent grub and soe cold beer
Nothing extravagant, but I miss that place.

As an LSU student, Sammy's food is good for the price. Much better than what's offered around campus and it's only 4 miles away.

Sammys crawfish etoufee is legit. I think some people have forgotten that good food doesnt have to be fancy. People are so unsatisfied these days it seems.

Not turning away from Sammy's. Just mentioned it was once much better, pre-dilution and proliferation. The once earlier efforts to make a name for oneself, and portions, and attention-to-detail, have transformed into a shooting fish-in-a-barrel multi-location operation, that though still solid, less than prior imho.

There is nothing wrong with much of Sammy's menu, but said sandwich sucks badly. And frankly I find standing in lines in 100* heat, for most any BR meal of any price range and demographic, not my thing.

As for chains in BR, outside of Maison Lacour, Ruffinos, LeCreole, Mansur's,etc.."chains" quickly fill the ranks of the better meals and dishes to be had in BR. The few I listed you make commentary of, are of equal price range, if not differing menus as Sammy's, thus technically somewhat a peer of theirs. I prefer their more expansive offerings menu, and what I view as some higher watermark dishes.

Buddy, I don't know what to say. I've never understood people willing to stand in 100* heat for 45 minutes to an hour outside Outback on Acadian it's first five years open in the 1990s..and feel the same when passing Sammy's on Highland, or stopping to get some Sammy's dressing to-go..hate when dragged by others to do so, though bite my lip graciously and smile.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, because I find waiting in that heat for that duration of time, for largely deep-fried greasy food..sorta stupid..just don't value it to such degrees. Standing in the doorways of a Don's, Mike Anderson's, etc..on a weekend..makes me feel like a tourist..like I'm missing a fannypack and fishing hat.

I did.not like the prime rib poboy either when I tried it (due to the hype lol) but fried cheese and a Patty melt makes a fine quick meal after work.

I've had that prime rib poboy and you are absolutely right, it is just not good. But c'mon, you can't knock a place after trying only one of their dishes.

They have really good crawfish and are consistent with their fried sea food dishes, which is why they stay busy IMO. Last time I went i even tried the ribeye, a dish that I typically will not order unless at a steak house, and it was surprisingly adequate. Their item are at least fresh if anything.

Sammy's is a great place to eat lunch, but I wouldn't wait in line to eat there for dinner.

Certainly not me. Two of my favorite spots in the city are Dorothy's and Delpit's Chicken Shack. Nothing fancy about those.

To be honest, I thought it was a very strange order for the OP in the first place.

I go to chains a lot. I don't care that you go to chains. But to balk at Sammy's and then discuss J Alexander's in the next sentence was odd.
