re: LA Senate panel approves bill to allow banning gay kids from charter schools

Whole lot of nothing. Actual Bill

Homosexuality is not a protected class and has never been held to be a protected class. I guess this legislation means charter schools can ban short people too or overweight individuals.

BTW Louisiana law doesn't provide anti-discrimination coverage based on sexual orientation and never has.

re: LA Senate panel approves bill to allow banning gay kids from charter schools

Is your problem that if a kids gay and is getting picked on in a certain school then that student can't use discrimination as an automatic excuse to go to a Charter School (at least publicly)?

I really don't understand why this is in a bill. It does seem rather ridiculous. How many kids use the gay card to go to Charter schools? Is there some type of abuse by gay students using their sexuality to enter Charter schools because I've never heard of this before?

I just want him to state his accusations, and where he found them expressly written in the bill.

He should change his title, because it is a 100% lie.

It ABSOLUTELY does. The Louisiana Dept. of Education does not allow discrimination against gay kids. This bill will supercede that authority. Why do you think the Louisiana Family Council is involved in this ??

Show me where the Dept. of Education prohibits this sort of thing. So far all I can find is a mention in the two articles you mentioned and a WaPo opinion page that cites the pro-gay rights blog. I have had no luck finding the actual provision (btw the legislature overrules executive departments, deal with it) from the louisiana department of education.

Toddy, I like you man. I really do. I stuck up for you at least twice when people insinuated that you were a pedophile. But dude, you really need to read this stuff that comes across your news feed more thoroughly.

Toddy and I are rarely on the same side, but I'm inclined to agree with him on this. To be fair, I'm not familiar with every detail of the bill. On general principle however, I have a hard time justifying a charter (public) school saying to a 12-year-old kid, "we don't want you here because you're gay. You need to find another school to attend." That immediately creates a separate-but-equal scenario.

Regardless of what one thinks about homosexuality, do we really approve of that? That to me crosses a line.

LINK

Interesting.

quote:

E. A charter school shall not:
(1) Be supported by or affiliated with any religion or religious organization or institution; however, a charter school may receive from any
such organization or institution support or student services including but not limited to mentoring, volunteering, fundraising, or tutoring.
(2) Result from the conversion of any private school or any home study program, as defined in R.S. 17:236.
(3) Charge any pupil any tuition or an attendance fee of any kind.
(4) Discriminate among potential employees, employees, or pupils in violation of any state or federal law.

That is the only mention of any form of the word "discriminate" mentioned in the Charter School Law. So tell me Toddy which law in Louisiana or the federal government lists sexual orientation as a protected class?

The proposed law changes pretty much nothing.

Oh, it doesnt have sexual orientation! the travesty!
*yawn* I can't imagine sending my kid to a private school where s/he was wanted as a student. Law or not. The only reason one would hide behind the law, and send your kid where they weren't wanted, would be to force a gay agenda on an unwelcoming parochial school. Why would anyone use their kid that way? You gotta be a sick bassturd to do something like that.

It's only 6 pages. Not much to read.

Nowhere, in that bill, does it state this is as acceptable. Quit believing the scare tactics by the left, and do actual research before "backing someone up". If this was the way Toddy said it was, you wont' find one person on here supporting it. But the bill does not say that. Toddy knows it. Thats why he doesn't respond when we ask him to point out where the bill says what he claims.

You have a brain, use it.

Oh yea and the Charter School Bulletin only has 1 mention of "discriminate" or any form of "discriminate" as well. Not surprisingly it is the exact same thing as in the Charter School Law.

So Toddy why do your linked sources blatantly lie about what is the actual Louisiana law and operating provisions of Louisiana Charter Schools?

So you provide a link to a "gay culture" and pro-gay rights blog as a definitive source on what this legislation does? Yeah, that doesn't seemed biased at all...

ONe of the links is to the Baton Rouge Advocate newspaper.

This is a direct quote:

quote:

A state Senate committee approved legislation Thursday that would allow charter schools to refuse to admit students on the basis of their ability to speak English, their sexual orientation or other factors.

Disgusting. I can see it now. Some kid is being bullied because he's gay or perceived to be gay. That's Ok. We'll just kick him out.

Why in hell do you think the Louisiana Family Council is supporting this legislation?

Wow, Charter Schools can deny a child that is not fluent in English. My girlfriend has a child that may be effected by this law because she is not as fluent in English. Charter Schools have ESL just like other public schools, this is just BS.

So Toddy. Link me to where the Education Department actually says this

quote:

“Charter schools may not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, creed, sex ethnicity, sexual orientation, mental or physical disability, age, ancestry, athletic performance, special need proficiency in the English language or in a foreign language, or academic achievement in admitting students, nor may charter schools set admissions criteria that are intended to discriminate or that have the effect of discriminating on any of these bases.”

I'll be waiting for you to find it for me.

Is this the purported bill?

That's the bill and it limits the definition of discrimination to what is already codified in Louisiana law. However, schools are held to a higher standard that includes additional categories like sexual orientation and athletic performance.

This bill allows schools to discriminate on a wide range of criteria, including, but not limited to, sexual orientation. It's just a bad bill introduced with the meanest of intentions.

I cringe every year when that gang lurches from the swamps and piney woods and converges on civilization.
