Make an Argument for your Favorite Artist

Who is your favorite Artist of all time and why?
I enjoy music from every genre but I think I can honestly say that Frank Sinatra, AKA Ol' Blue Eyes, is my all time favorite. His voice coupled with the big band swing style of the era just puts me in a great mood no matter how terrible of a day I'm having. It is classy, wholistic, and pure. It's a piece of Americana that we will never see again. That's why I choose Frank.
Whatcha got?

Merle Haggard, best singer/songwriter IMO.
Started releasing songs in the early 60's and is still putting them out. Never sold out to the pop-country, crossover, or outlaw sound.
38 #1 country hits
Drinking songs, sad songs, love songs, ballads, party songs, patriotic songs, he sings them all.

The Connells
Because when I made a best of, it had more songs on it than anything else I listen to. I was surprised actually.

Nice. I wore out their Fun & Games tape. The whole Chapel Hill music scene is very underrated. I think back to the 80's and they had just a good of a scene as Athens.

It's hard to vote against George Strait, the guy just keeps spinning out the hits.

This.
Although the only argument one could make against George is that he does not write his own songs (although he did dabble a little bit in songwriting on his newest album and his work did not suffer)

Modest Mouse simply because they haven't released a single song I dislike. Even in the early days of Sad Sappy Sucker, as lo-fi as those tracks are, there are hints of genius. Isaac Brock barks like a dog, but it totally works for his style of song writing. MM has a very solid following, and yet have flown pretty under the radar.

So, pre-Ring vs. post-One Simple Word?

yea, every single one of their song lyrics are incredibly deep and poetic.
there is even a class that they teach at washington and lee that is dedicated to studying modest mouse lyrics.
for me, i would say radiohead because i feel like they have started a revolution in music since the early 90s (ok computer) that is still going on.

Foo Fighters; Dave Grohl is one of the best rock & roll "hook" writers of all time and, IMO, the band is one of the only genuine rock & roll bands left in a world of Nickelbacks...

Neil Young
Doesn't need much of an argument but
He is a great guitarist and lyricist. Been around for a loonngg time. Has experimented with many styles of music and is still putting out good music. I love it all, acoustic, electric, with Crazy Horse, Crosby Stills Nash Young, Buffalo Springfield...
Neil Young is the man.

A southern man don't need him around...

Have your Skynyrd and I'll keep Neil Young.
That lyric wasnt meant to harm Neil. Him and Ronnie Van Zandt were friends and had a lot of mutual respect for each other. It was more a rebuttal at the generalization that all Southerners were racist. Young himself said he performed Sweet Home Alabama a couple of times.
