Grass Seed - Seeking advice from those w/ experience

Just bought zenith zoysia seed to replace rye grass when it dies off. I spread the rye seed with no prep work and didn't cover or water it last fall and it came up fine.
The zoysia bag has instructions a page long about prepping the ground and covering the seed 1/4" of topsoil and then covering everything with straw. It also says water it daily for 30 days. Is all of this absolutely necessary? Or will I get a fine stand by simply spreading it and doing nothing else? Looks like major rains are coming to help jump start it.
FYI - The area is weed-free with no turf grass, other than the rye. I mowed it this weekend, so all that remains is the rye and a small amount of mulched leaves. It is relatively flat and should not wash, especially with the rye in place. It gets morning sun and should not dry out quickly, especially in Spring.

they probably have instructions for a reason... i'm sure they do testing on what prepping will yield best results, and i'll bet what they recommend does precisely that.

Zoysia takes forever to cover an area. If all goes well you will have a lawn by the end of the summer.
I would do everything you listed for zoysia. I have planted it from seed before and it is not like rye grass. I can grow ryegrass in the back of my truck. Zoysia is better to sod.

Yes, for a good stand..yes. The straw will act like a mulch and keep the soil moist and prevent excessive drying.
You need 2 things to grow grass, water and heat.

Just rent a slit seeder. That's what I plan on doing if my yard doesn't spruce up soon.

First thing there is a big difference between rye and zoysia. Rye seed will grow by just broadcasting. Thats alot of the reason why people plant it. Little effort medium reward. Try that with zoysia and you will get no effort no reward. Rye is a cool season grain that when it sprouts and the roots are exposed (at its most vulnerable state)there is less chance of the roots being burnt up. Also if the rye does shade the zoysia seed enough to not burn up the roots the rye has a root system that grows out instead of down and you run into what we call root bound. No room for the roots of the zoysia to grow so disc and plant it right if you want the reward

If you seeded before you mow, the grass clippings will basically mulch your seeds for free.
