It really isn't a necessity for day hikes. I could definitely see the use if you were hiking the AT or even a couple day hike, but he can drink the water from the creek and really doesn't even need food for a 5 hour hike. He can have half of my sandwich.

Just finished reading this entire thread. Nice work, fellows.
My 10-year old son and I will be doing a 3 day hike in Sequoia National Park at some point.
We hike out one morning, set up camp somewhere, and the return 2 days later. Nothing difficult...I will have plenty of questions.

Haven't seen Blue Velvet post in a while. Glad you got some info out of this

Get some bear bags and read up on camping in bear country.
Got to keep your sleeping area and food prep/eating areas separate. Roger and LSUinNW could probably give you some good pointers on that.

I'm ready to take a couple days off of work and take my son on a weekend hiking trip. Know of anything close to BR we can go to?

The pack has everything you'd want.
Not sure about that brand though. If it will only get used sparingly it'll work. However, if it was going to get used quite a bit I said stay away and invest a little more and never have to worry about replacing it for years to come.
Eta....if only looking for a small pack check out REI's Outlet online and see what you can find that'll be close in price but more than likely better quality. REI makes a pretty good pack. Plus, you won't have an issue with customer service if there's a problem.
Eta2.....I found an REI 30 traverse pack for just a few dollars more. Having trouble linking it. Go to REI outlet, search backpacks. It's on page 1, baby blue pack. My ex girlfriend has the same one I bought for her.

I need to post some of my pics from the Olympic Peninsula from 2 weeks ago. We did not do any major hikes, just a couple of day hikes, but I still got some awesome pics.
My wife has already asked me to look into transferring to our Seattle office. We're thinking about it. That whole entire is just ridiculously gorgeous.
We plan on going back next summer and doing a proper backcountry trip.

Nice, I missed a big group trip to the area a month ago. I'm planning on doing the high divide trail when I get back with a friend. He wants me to intro him into the scene.

1. I tried out a bunch of packs, but I found Gregory to have the most comfortable...tried an Osprey and an REI pack and thought they were uncomfortable on my lower back...both seem to have harder padding in the back area. Maybe their design makes that area more breathable, but I didn't care for how it felt...is this common issue with some packs?
2. What type of hats do people normally wear?
3. Do you bring special chairs to use when are sitting around camp?
Posted on 7/18/12 at 9:32 am to Chicken
1. Gregory makes a quality pack and comfort is very important. If it feels better, go with it.
2. I wear a bandanna to keep sweat from dripping down my face. You can wear a typical ball cap if you aren't going far. Otherwise I see people wearing outdoor research brand hats, they aren't made out of cotton and wick very well. Cotton isn't a hiker/backpackers friend.
3. I have a crazy creek chair for car camping but carry a similar type chair when backpacking. I'm having trouble linking on my phone but search Thermarest Trekker chair kit. Your pad folds into it and it creates a chair.

1) Gregory is probably my favorite backpack company, with Osprey a close second. The hard padding just helps with support. You'll need that support if you have a heavy pack.
2) If it's hot, some type of mesh hat. I'll wear my Columbia fishing hat.
3) You can pack in a folding chair, but those are usually around 5 lbs, so it just depends on what type of weight you want to carry. I have a roll-up chair. It is not as comfortable as a folding chair, but it's only 1 lb, and it's small. It's better than nothing.

I like a three leg camping stool to sit on but even that is a lot of weight for me
