Currently have all 30.06s and .300 Win Mags for deer hunting. Needing some suggestions on a smaller caliber for wife. I'm leaning towards the .243 or the 7mm-08. Thoughts/suggestions.. I won neither of those calibers.

7mm-08 hands down. Anything else is just not a smart decision IMO.

When I hunt big game, there are two questions I always ask myself.
1. How big is game?
2. How fast?

This should help you in determing your caliber.

7mm08

I have my 8 year old placing nice shots 100 yards away. No recoil whatsoever.

My best friend and brother in law use 7mm08 for their kids as well....furthest any deer traveled was 10 yards after the shot.

Since you are worried about the scope cutting your wife....
Look at rifles with a Monte Carlo Stock (easier to lock chin onto stock and absorb recoil) and look at scopes with a solid rubber ring (no cut if bumps face/nose) with good eye relief (allowing scope tube to be mounted farther up). Couple that with a rifle over say 7.5 pounds and the recoil should be manageable. I think a really light rifle (youth model) will increase recoil...

As far as caliber goes....Well, there are 7 pages of opinion on that.
