It will be nice to know that our secondary can properly play zone and not have the corners and safeties totally confused on covering WR's.

I hope we can remember how to tackle properly as well, but considering you are hardly allowed any contact in practice I wonder if that will change.

Too many fans credited Williams for being the difference in '09 when the success of the defense getting turnovers was more on Vilma & Sharper

Really? So when players play well, the coach doesn't get credit and the players were just carrying his scheme. When they play poorly, it's all the scheme. Very convenient.

I also disagree that that blitzing is "outdated". Jets D is a prime example of this. If you have guys that can cover on islands on the back end as well as playmakers to take advantage of bad decisions made on less time than needed(sharper, reed, revis etc.)We don't have these guys. A blitz heavy defense can still work and does in the nfl.

I don't give a frick about what you or anyone else says. I'll continue to cheer & support my team no matter what some dickhead says on a frickin message board. That won't stop me from being the biggest critic either whenever I see something wrong with them as well. So excuse me for telling it like is about a DC whose scheme was old & outdated.

Once again, see above for old and outdated part. Secondly, I have no problem whatsoever with you being a critic. GW deserved to have critics this year. They stunk, but to say GW is a joke of a dc just comes off as pretty ignorant.

Yet GW continued to try and force a square peg down a round hole. This is my main gripe, a great coach will adjust his system to match his players strengths. GW failed here miserably.

re: Spagnoulo to be new DC (per Jay Glazer)

Thoughts? Everyone seems excited, I posted this on the coaching changes board:

I like Spags. He's a good coach. He did a lot of good things while he was an assistant coach with the Eagles, which developed his reputation.

That being said, I'm unsure of his ability as an upper-tier DC. His time in NY was spotted.

In 2007, they were 17th in total defense and 16th in scoring. They went on a tremendous run in the playoffs and that banked him as a star candidate on the rise, which helped overcome the fact that they were average during the regular season.

In 2008, they were 5th in total d and 5th in scoring. But their offense played poorly and kept them from doing anything in the playoffs.

He got hired by the Rams, where his defenses were terrible. But his personnel was in serious need of revamping.

Obviously he has a tremendous reputation, but it will be interesting to see if he's able to field an improved product in New Orleans.

I really don't think coaches change their systems that much when they get new personnel. The best dc's that have been doing it forever (the dick lebeaus, kiffens, johnsons,Ryans) pretty much stay consistent. I'd not bash GW for not altering the way he schemes but instead failing miserably at scouting and getting new players to fit his scheme.

We've got the offense to get us through the reg. season. It's the playoffs where we need him to come through for us.

This will never happen with Brees and Payton at the helm.

I'm happy to see him come to NOLA. If hes as good as GW we got the playoffs on lock. If hes just a little bit better, there'll be a black and gold superbowl in the Dome.

I don't disagree, but not really what I'm asking.

Is he capable of fielding a consistently good unit? It cost the Saints the past two years with Williams. No matter how good Brees and the offense played.

Still seems like the offense should shoulder a lot of the blame for the Niners game though. Can't turn it over that much.

Cost us what? Its damn near impossible to repeat the superbowl and we made it to the divisional playoffs this year. The game was in no way shape or form entirely Greggs fault no matter what anyone says. It was a team effort loss, I agree with you there.

As for your consistency question: Yes I believe he can consistently field a good D. C. Jordan and Tez Wilson are the two i am most looking forward to next season after an offseason with a new DC. Our Corners are solid. Greer is a beast and Prob has been showing some improvement. If we resign Tracy P its just adding to the depth. I personally like our Safteys, who have been taking alot of heat on this board lately.. Malcom is my favorite player on the D and Harper excels in alot of categories (obviously not coverage, but he makes up for it). Our Lb's may leave something to be desired, but we have an offseason to sign FA's and draft rookies as well as Tez and Dunbar playing big lately. As far as our line, i think we have the talent there to do whatever we want whether its a 4-3 or a 3-4. Yes i believe he can consistently field a good D and we can bring that Lombardy back to NOLA.

The pierre fumble was unfortunate, wasn't really a matter of mechanics, the dude just got knocked the fricked out before he even hit the dirt.

The special team fumbles were the back breakers. Huge swings in field position and possession time.

I feel like the team lost that one, but the fact that we still were this close || to winning says some things about our team.

Well I think the Saints relatively poor defense can be pointed to as what hurt the team the past two years.

It will be interesting to see what Spags does. He blitzed a lot in STL. but that probably has more to do with their lack of a pass rush. In NY, he didn't need to do that, with guys like Osi/Strahan/Tuck that can all get to the passer.

His background with the Eagles under JJ was blitz heavy with corners playing a lot of zone.

Doesn't seem like the Saints have any really great pass rushers (Cameron Jordan could emerge), though.

Tez Wilson too dude. And Harper was like half a sack away from the most sacks by a DB since the stat was kept. We have the ability and talent to be a great defense next year.

"Gentlemen, we can rebuild them. We have the technology. We have the capability to have a second Superbowl wining DC in New Orleans. Steve Spagnuolo will be that man. The defense will be better than they were before. Better...stronger...faster."
