Is it that hard to find a power hitter these days?

I know that gorilla ball is gone, but LSU should be able to find a power hitting first baseman and/or outfielder every year. It's ridiculous that they can't find someone to anchor the middle of the batting order that can strike some fear in the opposing team's pitchers. Bats or not, LSU should not be in the position offensively that it's been in since 2009. And unfortunately, I don't see much difference this year. Lots of role players and one possible offensive star (Jones).

No it's not hard to find one...just go check any Class A roster in the minor leagues.

These folks ain't hitting 40 dingers a year anymore......offense stars are going to be the guys that are going to hit .380 w/ 8ish homers and a bunch of RBI's....I think that Jones can do that if he gets his shite together hell I bet Rhymes could do that if he holds it together all year......this is assuming the role players you talked about can get on base for them.

I'm sure there are enough guys who there who could hang the 15hrs a year. The question is not can they jack one, but can they be a viable option hitting .300+?

There is one in Gulfport, Ms. All state player on a 6A team that has batted in the 4 spot since 10th grade. He has played for the La. Knights, Ms All star team that played in Okie land last yr. No love from the Tigers. He signed with Jones CC today. Oneof the top jucos in the country. Die hard Tiger fan.

When you factor in the new bats and the quality of pitching it's harder for power hitters to flourish.

So you don't consider Mahtook from last year as a power hitter? This is the first year we aren't perceived to have one in awhile. But who knows, maybe Katz, Rhymes or Jacoby becomes that guy.

Only 6 guys in the whole nation hit > 20 HR last season and they went to:

Georgia Southern
James Madison
College of Charleston
East Tenn. St.
North Carolina A&T
Texas St.

In the big time conferences it will be much more difficult to have those big time HR hitters.

Only 5 guys in all of the SEC had 10 or more HR.

The leader in the SEC was Florida's Zunino and it took him 72 games to hit 19 HR. To compare Mahtook hit 14 HR in 56 games.

Jones gets a lot of back spin on the ball. He will be a star and if he has the right mindset at the plate he could hit over .400.

Finding them isn't difficult... finding one who can hit it with the new bat laws is.

I totally agree with you, StatMaster.

The "different era" argument is a total red herring.

Basically, it means that your old power hitters who may have hit ~30 HRs in years past will now only hit around ~18. So what? You still need them just as much. For example, Joey Belle only hit 21 HR in 1986, and he was still the MVP of the team.

On the one hand, I don't think you necessarily need power at the traditional power positions in baseball. If you can find a singles hitter who is just flat out great at hitting, then by all means, get him in your regular lineup. Just by the nature of the positions, though, you generally should end up with power hitters there more often than not. For whatever reason, Mainieri just hasn't recruited great hitters at those positions as well as he should have, focusing instead on pitching and the positions up the middle of the field (rather than at the corners and foul lines).

What I wouldn't give to see LSU get another Matt Clark type of player at 1B.
