FYI...it's the same answer for both coaches.

And that answer is....?

Experience. For better or worse, both coaches preferred to go with the experienced guy over the more talented guy despite the fact that each young player would have benefited greatly from the added time for the following season.

I'm not defending either coach, as I'd have likely turned it over to Russell and Mett both times...but it's clear both coaches believed this. Feel free to disagree with their take, but let's not pretend it's some secret.

Put another way, there's literally no reason to think Mett sucks because he didn;t see the field than there was to believe Russell and Flynn sucked because Marcus Randall was playing in front of them.

Mettshiah has a cannon for an arm and a great group of receivers should be an air show next year. ODB should have a break out year going deep and RS should start stretching the field

Also Play action should be a staple with the stable of running backs. It could be deadly if the coach sets it up right.

It really makes me wonder about Miles knowledge of football when he speaks about JJ`s moblility in the Alabama game, does he not know that maybe Lee could have slowed the Bama defense down by throwing screen passes or short passes to the flat.

As always with Miles, seeing is believing. Actions speak louder than words.

Quick question...do you think Nick Saban thought JaMarcus Russell and Matt Flynn were a better passers than Marcus Randall in 2004? If so, why did Saban play Randall over them most of the year?

You do remember LSU's bowl game that year, don't you? Most LSU fans only remember Iowa's hail mary to win the game, but Nick Saban played three, yes that's right, three quarterbacks that day. Jamarcus Russell came off the bench and was the one that finally got LSU in a groove leading the comeback that put the Tigers in position to possibly win. No Jamarcus Russell that day, and there would have been no need for Iowa's last second heroics. Still, Saban seemed determined to find the quarterback with the hot hand.

Just sayin.

Sure...but you remember the rest of the season, right? Where if there was no JaMarcus Russell LSU loses at home in the game opener to Oregon St? It was clear to EVERYONE then (just as it was likely clear to everyone this year when Mett got in and slung it around) that the best QB was the younger guy. Saban, like Miles this year, went with experience. While Saban DID play Russell in parts throughout the season, he never once turned the reigns over to "The Future" despite knowing full well he was the better QB.

As for the Bowl game, Saban did EVENTUALLY get tyo Russell, but if you recall it wasn;t until BOTH Randall and Flynn stunk. It was reported tht Russell was in Saban's doghouse, and he was reluctant to play him. He finally did, and Russell went off.

I'll give you one more example for good measure. Take 2003. LSU started that season with Shy Carey and Joe Addai running the ball. By the end of the season, Justin Vincent had gained 1,000 yards and Alley Broussard had become a force? What changed? Well, it wasn't Saban's desire to play the freshman. It took Shy Carey getting hurt at MSU and Joe Addai getting hurt against Florida before Saban reluctantly played Vincent, Broussard (and even Barrington Edwards) against South Carolina on the road. The rest is history...

Coaches are stubborn...all of them are. Most will tend to go with experience over raw talent. There are exceptions to that rule, but it still holds in most cases.

Again...I'm in no way suggesting I agree with any of these decisions, just that I understand where they are coming from.

You're either twisting things in your own mind, or purposefully mistating them. Jamarcus looked raw and not-ready-for-primetime most of the season. I guess you forgot about that horrible midseason start Jamarcus got against Florida (Randall was healthy that game). That was the game where Randall had to come off the bench to save a 24-21 win. All season, Saban was doing what he could to find the quarterback that would spark LSU's offense. At any rate, by the end of the season, Saban knew what he had at quarterback, and had no problem shuttling players in and out of the lineup in the bowl game to find the hot hand when, as you stated, Randall and Flynn were ineffective. Miles got horrible play from Jefferson against Georgia and Alabama (1/9) but seemed oblvious to this fact.

oh shite your just asked the question that everybody in tiger stadium wanted to know the answer to? If JJ is so much better than Mett how the hell can we be looking forward to next season. and if Mett hssn't learned the playbook by the end of the season what makes you think he will learn it by next season. its all bull shite.
Miles decided he was going with JJ period and is too damn stubborn to make a change. It might not have worked but what were doing for sure didn't work
