Best season I've seen (and I started in Casanova days); what were the "big picture" factors...

1a. Prepping for Oregon focused team and "speed" conditioning/practice had us start in near mid-season form on D.

1b. Chavis defense now firmly in place and can reload with depth (also special teams)

2.Miles hiring and support of Kragthorpe.

Other factors...what say you?

I think that Oregon game prep was huge. I felt like we had been gassed by the end of the season the last couple seasons but that prep really kept them ferocious every single game.

1)Special teams. Great kickers, outstanding returners, best athletes are used in coverage.
2)Disruptive defensive playmakers combined with conservative offensive philosophy results in winning turnover margin.
3)Power running game and play action passes make passing attack lethal even though under-utilized.
4)Team comprised of so many fantastic athletes, so much depth, team believes it can overcome any adversity.
5) The mystical power of the "Hat". CLM leads a charmed life, apparently has 9 lives and has voodoo magic working for him. His success is preordained, probably because he is such a genuine person and likeable guy.

I had heard moffit was battling some health problems, could be a big reason the strength and conditioning was much better. I dont want us to have to start the season with otegon to be conditiined properly.

Having a stable of backs on offense, les turnovers on offense. The fact we used 32 guys on defense also kept us fresh all season long. Lee and brooks class wete also the last ones to be part of a champiinship team and they were redshirts, all the new players are hungry and wanted to write their own gistory at LSU.

The biggest question mark entering the spring and before august was special teams. Not to dimish what jasper and helton did but our 3d kickers now are younger and better.

Narrowing it down (w/o the playmaking):
1. Beating Oregon in G1 was huge for LSU's confidence and swagger!
2. Play calling and personnel changes by coaching staff A+.
3. NO major injuries!
Did I miss anything? Oh yea - great fan support!

It seems to me that there is a purpose and focus to this team that is far superior to any of the previous Les coached teams. Sometime in the 2nd half of the Oregon game, it occurred to me that we hadn't seen any of the brain farts that seem to pop up in practically every game the last few years. Not the clock management stuff, but things like not getting plays or defensive sets in on time, confusion in personnel groupings, and similar issues that result in penalties or use of timeouts. I don't think this is just getting rid of Crowton, but something about how the playcalling and decision making is being handled among the staff.
