Don't feel bad--I wouldn't have gotten it either if I hadn't seen it in another thread. If you're telling time and the time were 9 to 6 (9 minutes until 6:00), you could say it as 5:51.
ETA: I think the phrase should actually be "9 'til 6" but no one really enunciates the "'til" and it just sort of becomes "to" instead.

9 to 6 however there is a backstory.
In 1982 God himself(Bear Bryant) lost to LSU by a score of 20 to 10.
One night a couple of months later he was turning a little water into wine, and getting kinda rowdy. He asked his wife what time it was and she told him 20 to 10 or 9:40. The bear ascended into hell (arrested) for battery before rising into lore as the greatest coach of all time.
He was fired shortly after and passed away about a year later.

It's an abbreviated version of 9-6 even though it's longer.
