I'm sure this has been discussed in the past, but I have decided to start my 8yr old off with a 7mm08. He's on the small side, but does very well grouping his scoped .22 Marlin at 50 yrds. Any particular model recommended? Looking for limited recoil. Thanks

Remington Model 7 is a youth sized rifle. I actually have one in 7mm-08. Incredible Rifle for Whitetail.

Howa makes a youth model 7-08 that comes with a scope and an adult stock that you can switch over later. This co used to make Weatherbys, nice gun.

7mm-08 was given to my step son by his grandma and her boyfriend. Anyhow, I do not know why. The kick is not much different than 270 or 30.06. People act as if kids are scared of a little kick. My problem with it is ammo. I went to find ammo for Christmas for him and the two choices are 40 dollar box and Rem Core Lokt that was all out. I was looking for Core lokt. All other calibers have many different makes of ammo. This caliber only had 2. Damn I wish I knew they were buying this rifle for him.

I agree. Finding rounds is difficult.

To OP: how small is small? My 7 year old shot a 7mm-08 and a 270 last year at 4'3" and 65 lbs. Now he's 4'7" 75 lbs and handles the .270 with no problem.

He's 8, about 70lbs. Didn't know about the ammo issue.

savage youth model package is sweet - especially with accu trigger and you can get a adult sized stock for just 50 bucks later..

I always see 7mm-08 ammo. I live near about 8 Acadamy stores and a Bass Pro though.

.243 would likely be a good substitute for that 7mm-08, and I think ammo would be easier to locate if that is a concern.

My Fiancee busted a 200 lb buck with a 7MM-08 this weekend.
She was shooting a low recoil round with less powder or something like that and had no problems dropping the buck at 150 yards.
So Pick whatever gun you like and find some of those rounds. Kicks less than a 243.

I have 7mm-08 and have had trouble finding a selection of ammo. I usually have to visit 3 stores to get 2 options. I got my son the model 7 youth and just replaced the stock when he got older.

The internet is the way to go with ammo now-a-days. Search and ye shall find.

Ammo is easy to find, but there is only about one bullet choice no matter what brand you get. It is almost always going to be 140 grain. That is just because it works so well.

I bought my son a Browning X Bolt Micro Hunter 7mm-08 several years ago. it is not a "youth model" but a smaller more compact rifle. great gun for deer and great groupings. he is an adult size now and still shoots it. I take it when he does not go. never lost a deer with it.

At your sons age you may have to help get him set up to shoot in a stand but the recoil should be no problem. practice a lot at the range to get him used to it.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I have a Remington model 700 that my uncle gave me when I was younger. Great gun that has killed a lot of deer. bought another one for my kids to use 2 years ago. I've never had trouble finding ammo and I've been able to find the Remington Core Lokt in 140 and 120 grain. Usually about $28 a box
