Sources: Arkansas St. tabs Gus Malzahn
from ESPN

Auburn coordinator Gus Malzahn agreed Tuesday to become Arkansas State's new football coach, replacing Hugh Freeze, sources close to the coach confirmed to ESPN.com.
Malzahn will return to his home state and become a college head coach for the first time. As offensive coordinator at Auburn, Malzahn helped lead Cam Newton and the Tigers to the BCS national championship in January.
A person close to Malzahn said that not only was the coach looking for a head-coaching opportunity but that he was "looking for a change" from Auburn and "looking to move onto something else."

In what might be the most surprising hire of the 2011 coaching carousel, Arkansas State has hired away coveted Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn as the Red Wolves' new head football coach.
The news was being reported Tuesday night by multiple outlets including the Birmingham News, AuburnUndercover.com, and others. Malzahn will replace new Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze, hired by the Rebels Dec. 4 after one 10-2 season in Jonesboro.
Whether Malzahn would remain on the Auburn staff through the Tigers' Chick-Fil-A Bowl appearance was not immediately clear.

USA Today
from NBC Sports

Exactly one year ago today, it was reported that Gus Malzahn had turned down an offer in the neighborhood of $3 million to become the head coach at Vanderbilt.
Fast-forward 365 days, and the Auburn offensive coordinator is reportedly set to become a head coach at a non-automatic qualifying conference school. For about a fifth of what he turned down from Vandy. And for around 50-percent less than what he’s making now as a coordinator.

from national football authority

Per sources close to National Football Authority, Gus Malzahn will be the next head coach of the Arkansas State Red Wolves via a multi-year deal that includes $750,000 annually and a home in a gated country club community.
Malzahn, 46, is an Arkansas native and is coming to Arkansas State from the Auburn Tigers where he has been offensive coordinator since 2009. The A-State position will be Malzahn's first head coaching job at the college level. Malzahn will live in a university provided home at RidgePointe Estates south of Jonesboro.

UPDATED 10:09 p.m. ET: The Birmingham News is reporting that Malzahn will become the next head coach at Arkansas State, with a press conference expected to take place Wednesday. Per the News, Malzahn’s contract with the Red Wolves is expected to average $850,000 annually.

* Malzahn wanted badly to be a head coach. He was literally hours away from being named head coach at Kansas when suddenly Charlie Weiss got the job instead. He was the leading candidate early on at North Carolina. In both cases, the edited videotape of his wife's interview at church function played a major part in him being passed over. Is that fair? No, especially since it was severely edited by someone with no life and no conscience to make her look as bad as possible. But fair or not, it happened. *

"Told Malzahn willing to take the pay cut for chance to be happier and enjoy new situation." -------------- Seriously, I hope Gus, the Mrs, and the children are safely out of Lee Co. now

I think this a good fit and good first HC job for Malzahn...

I am skeptical he takes it and, if he does, I'd be skeptical as to why. This is a guy who turned down an SEC job last yr and was literally one interview away from the Kansas job this yr.
Maybe the lure of "home" is too much, but i'd be surprised.

Not going to believe it until it happens. That guy has been reported to take every job available, but it never happens.
He's a good OC, but he doesn't worry me at Auburn.

taking a pay cut to go work at arkansas state doesnt seem like a smart career choice.

Why would he take the Arkansas State job over the Southern Miss job??????????????????????????????

malzahn really fricked up not leaving after last year. Career-killing bad decision IMO.

Current estimates are that Ark St has put over $800K in front of Gus. Stay tuned.

Malzahn should take it, even with the paycut. Dude was exposed this season for the mediocre OC he is. He can do well in the Sun Belts, but outside of having a freak like Cam as his QB, his offenses won't cut it in the big leagues, even in the Big XII.

Wow and congrats on the big hire.

Has this bit of trivia been mentioned?
Arkansas state's first game next year is scheduled to be at Oregon.

Gus apparently made it a point to say this isn't just about the opportunity at Arky St., but about leaving Auburn.
