A college football playoff?

As much as I think I would enjoy a playoff for college football, this season sure is damn exciting. Knowing that if we lose we are probably done for a MNC.
All the talk of the Bama game made me wonder if this game would have as much meaning knowing that the loser would probably still make the playoffs. As of now it's a do or die for each team and I'm really enjoying the buildup to this game.

In essence, there is a playoff this year.
1 will play 2. 3 will play 4.
The winners of those games probably won't lose this year....well osu could probably lose again I suppose.

Make everyone who wants to contend for a NC, join a conference with a championship. Conference champs form the playoffs and last one standing is the national champs. But anything like that will never happen.

Second!
I've sent that same scenario to the NCAA, BCS, and conference presidents each of the last five or six years. Deaf ears.
We could even keep some of the bowls, too. I like the idea of rewarding the team for a winning season.

I kind of like football the way it is. Every weekend is a play off.
The only thing I might go for is possibly a 4 team playoff.

I would love a playoff simply because you don't know which team is better unless you play. Oklahoma may be the best team. Stanford may be the best team. Boise State may be the best team, but until they meet on the field it is all computers and opinions. I don't buy this regular season is a playoff. Regular season would still mean something if you had to be in the top 8 to make the playoffs.

Horrible solution. You're assuming that the conferences are equal strength. They're not. A fifth place SEC team would beat a Sun Belt Conference champ. Using your idea would leave one of the most powerful teams in college football (either Alabama or LSU) out of the playoffs and allow a team like Troy in.

Exactly

See I agree with that. But I get what the OP is saying. IF there is a playoff, LSU/BAMA loses its luster a bit because loser still has a shot at playoffs.

What they need to do is remove the bcs bowls and take all the teams that would play in them +2 more and make 4 byes, and 4 play in games. Just like the nfl .
Or just do eight teams straight up

I used to want a playoff....
I still do but sort-off.
I would rotate the location of 2 Bowls each year, much like we do the NC game and have the top 4 reams play in those 2.
Then 1 more game.
Here is why I changed my mind to a more expanded format.
In BBall, the facilities can fit around 12,000 people + or -
There is enough demand to continue to fill the facilities as they go from location to location, even if not with the same people. So, the Regionals are full as well as the final venue.
In FBall, the facility fits about $ 90,000 + or -, it would be harder to fill each facility if an individual team would have to play in, let's say 3 different locations before the NC Championship is decided.
The expense of traveling would prevent most from making more than one trip, MOST would choose the FINAL, so the other venues in route to the FINAL, would suffer in attendance.
I would still support a "+ 1 format".
NOTE: While the BCS is not perfect, it could work.
Only, I would give the math portion of the formula 10 more % points and take away 5 % from each of the human components.

I'm a big fan of the plus-one idea.
Probably my favorite part would be that after the two BCS bowls matching 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3, the championship would be a week later, which is pretty much already the case (Jan. 10 or whenever it is now).
It would also allow the people to see the two top teams play each other without a month and a half to prepare. They get one week, just like any other game, and then line up and go at it.

Sure, everything is shaping up decently this year, and is making the Nov 5 showdown an epic event.
But pretend for a second that the BCS rankings looked like this:
1.Oklahoma
2.Wisconsin
3.LSU
4.Stanford
Now imagine if they all finished undefeated.
Do you realize how fricked we would be because we continue to use the regular season as a playoff and poll opinions to determine who is "The Best"?

Can everyone that keeps saying this year we have a playoff because 1v2 and 3v4, please stop??
It's nowhere near what a playoff system would be.

Yeah, but what I think they're saying is that, considering the system we have right now, LSU/Bama and OU/OSU is the closest we're gonna get to a "playoff" in college football this season.
Or for that matter, the closest we've ever been to a "playoff" in the BCS era.

Yeah, like when Texas beat Oklahoma in that playoff in 2008, right? The BCS is a huge improvement over the old system, but it is still very flawed. A playoff would be better.

That would be better than the 2-team playoff we have now.

There is more than one "plus-one" idea. One is a seeded 4-team playoff, but the other is less definite. The original plus-one idea was simply to keep the BCS bowls like they are now, but then, after they've been played, select the two top teams for a plus-one game for the NC. The seeded 4-team playoff is OK, but the other seems like a bad idea.

I'm pretty sure the +1 idea with the most steam right now is to combine elements of both. Two BCS bowls would match 1v4 and 2v3 and the winners play each other for the NC. Not simply that the two NC teams are "selected" after the BCS bowls.

all we need is a plus 1. I believe the loser of the bama lsu game if they win out will be in the top 4 anyway.
