Covington today...I've haven't had a whole lot of beignets in my life. What's your opinion on beignets? I think they're just meh and nothing speciaL. It has been several years since I've had the real deal in NO.

I think they are magnificent.
Of course I thought the same thing about Yuengling until I could buy it whenever I wanted.

I bring my little boy to the Covington location every weekend.
He's 2 and can put down some beignets.
I like the coffee better than the beignets.

Beignets are tourist chum...

I prefer donuts to beignets. I don't understand the tourist infatuation with them.

Love them. But I also love donuts, so...

Yeah, and you are also confused about who to root for also. The difference between A and B are involved with your OWN tastes, and long before the tourists learned about bieghnets people from Louisiana were sitting by the river to eat them, and there was no tv or even radio to advertise the place, and NOLA was not a tourist city when CDM first opened. Kind of makes me think that they did a pretty good job of selling a bit of French cuisine in a Francophile city.

I love them. Tourists eat boiled and fried seafood, poboys, oysters rock, trout amandine etc... too, and so do I.

When CDM and Morning Call opened on Decatur, the last thing people did was sit by the river and eat their beignets. The river was separated from the people by industrial warehouses and many rail lines that were constantly in use. Saying that people ate their beignets on the river in the early 20th century is like saying people grab a beer at Tip's and perambulate down to the riverside today. A romantic vision, but it does not fit the historical geography. And yes, NOLA was a tourist city back then.
How is a beignet any more French than a donut? Both are fried dough, but at least donuts are sometimes filled with a fruit filling, as beignets are in France.

True. I probably came off a little arrogant and mean there. Sorry.

Bacon, eggs, pancakes/waffles, french toast, shrimp and grits, etc > beignets.

I'll have to disagree
I don't eat them often but I think they go well with au lait
I know Tulane said that he preferred donuts...I don't like getting all sticky from donuts. I know you get covered in powdered sugar at CDM but I prefer the texture and taste

I'm pretty sure that groceries like Rouses and Winn Dixie sell the Cafe Du Monde beignet mix as well. They taste exactly the same fried up at home as they do at Cafe Du Monde; probably cheaper too.
