You're staying in the tourist part of town and there are a lot of fine restaurants within walking distance.
My family's favorite is A1A Aleworks. It is reasonably priced and we've always liked the food. The view if you sit on the balcony is very nice - overlooking the Bridge of the Lions and the harbor. The microbrew is very good.
Columbia Restaurant would be the place to go if you want to step up a little. The theme is Spanish, but they have good steaks, if you don't like Spanish food. The seafood dishes I've had their are fantastic, and the Paella is great (I think they have a couple of different kinds).
There are other restaurants in the area - depending on your mood and what you want to eat. Ask the locals.

The food there, as you probably have guessed, is lacking. A1a ale works is terrible. Skip it at all costs.
OC whites was ok.
My fave was casa maya. Authentic mayan cuisine. I don't think they have booze there so be fore warned.

Didn't mean to hate on your fam's favorite. Posting from phone is slow. Are you from LA? I can't see how anyone from here can like A1A. I found the food bland and service very poor.

We don't go there for the service. The view from the balcony is exceptional. I like the food. It's very reasonably priced fresh seafood - not fried. The Paella is excellent, as is the sesame tuna. I had a crabmeat BLT, once for lunch, that was delicious. As I said, the beer is very good.beer.
Most everything is under 20 bucks, so it's not 5 star dining.
I find the inside of the restaurant to be loud and crowded. It's amazing what a quiet table on the balcony will do to help you enjoy the experience.
I am from LA. The food at A1A is Carribean-influenced, not cajun, so I don't see the connection.

Funny, I found OC Whites to be terrible, the one time I went, so I have never been back. I have never been to Casa Maya.
There are a lot of small restaraunts in St. Augustine that I've wanted to try, but never have. Usually because I'm either with my wife for a nice dinner (and didn't want to risk it), or with the kids and some of these counterculture kinds of places wouldn't do well with them.

I like caribbean food and did not think a1a got close. A1A has good beer and a nice view. I guess I pick restaurants for food. I wasn't particular suggesting OC whites just found it better than A1A if trying to eat near the water.
Try the mayan place when you go back. It is the only restaurant in st aug I have wanted to eat at multiple times.

Will do. Have you tried Columbia?

Let's send them to Tradewinds bar, and then get their review.

Did not get to try columbia. Unfortunately, my old lady finished school (USA) so I probably wont make it back to st aug for a long time.
Really liked the city.

Excellent choice a little pricey and a little crowded depending on night and time. Right off of St. George Street. A stone throw from the spanish fort. I have a strong arm so might be a little farther.

As mentioned Columbia is nice for Spanish/Cuban food, somewhat upscale.
For a beach restaurant we drive down to the Oasis. Good for burgers, fish sandwiches and fish tacos; and the laid back atmosphere.
For something in between we really like Gypsy Cab. It's a mile or so across the Bridge of Lions from downtown. It's a small restaurant with an eclectic variety of foods. That would be my pick.
We don't live in St. Aug. but have family there so we visit it often. Great place.

There are an abundance of these types of restaurants in St. Augustine. There are also some local favorites that serve fried seafood. If I was visiting St. Augustine, and not likely to return anytime soon, I would want at least one meal that was memorable while in St. Augie.
Another place to go is the popsicle place - is it Hyppo?

Columbia is great. I went with a big party and everyone loved their dish. Salad is great. Shared a pitcher of mojitos and I'm normally not a fan but it was a delicious drink.
