how does this work exactly? does lsu pay him...to me, that seems like they are paying the players so i wouldn't think that is the case

He won't do it for free because of NCAA implications as he is considered a LSU booster. My guess...$1.00.

In addition to their criminal defense, they will be sued civily for damages and their defense will require payment from somebody. In the end, they will be paying.

I was wondering the same. I saw in a article that he was going to do it for free as he had before for other LSU players in different instances, but the LSU compliance department was not ok with that and told him to charge them. That was before the arrest, when he went with them to meet with the police Tuesday. I would imagine he needs to charge them with regards to what he would charge any individual in a similar matter or it could be considered a NCAA violation. And as far as LSU paying for it, that would definitely be a NCAA violation I would assume.

Everyone seems to assume there will be a civil suit, but I doubt it. It's going to involve the defense lawyer doing his best to drag the victims' names through the mud. And the odds of recovering any meaningful amount of money from these players is basically zero. They just don't have any money to take. Although maybe they could get a writ to seize Jefferson's many pairs of Nikes.
As to paying Fisher here, there was some talk that every team has a "Player Assistance Fund" or something and that, in the past, that money has been used to pay for some legal expenses. I don't have a link though.

Alot of times they can go after the parents if theyre being financially supported and considered dependents.

Fisher represents a lot of other (non-athlete) college students for free and/or very reduced rates. He is also an Ole Miss grad and fan. LSU found themselves the perfect attorney for their athletes to skirt NCAA compliance...willing to take other reduced-rate or free student cases and not a rabid fan.

Maybe, but I know the LSU compliance department said they weren't ok with him doing it for free. Hold on, I'll find the article.

So murderers can get a free attorney, but some college students in a bar fight can't? Yeah, right.
The NCAA is powerful, but not powerful enough to have ANY authority to even discuss a student-athlete's attorney and how they will or will not pay for it, or if it is pro bono or not. Even if they were, Fisher could just charge them and they would never pay it and he would never collect it and he could write it off to bad debt.
