even when we were getting our butts beat, at least we took the field and gave it a shot.

What else would they do? forfeit?

LSU could whine to the SEC about the permanent rivalry not being "fair"... like apparently several LSU fans in this thread.

58-3
Never forget.
If that isnt motivation enough to consider them a big rival and want to kick their arse every year, idk what is.

When they beat us 58-3, we weren't rivals. We were a speedbump. I was at that game, and it wasn't like Florida ran up the score -- we just couldn't stop them at all. I've never been mad about that game, it just made me want for the tigers to get good.

I love the Florida game. I love their fans, I love their stadium, and I love that its now usually a closely contested teams between two top notch teams. I don't have any hatred towards Florida -- I just wanna beat them becuase they are good. Florida's pretty far down my hate list. Hell, I hate Arkansas more than I hate Florida.

From 1991-2001 when Spurrier retired...I honestly believe even the bulk of most every die hard Tiger fans would write this game off as an automatic L.........That forementioned stretch was the product of LSU having the worst coaching in the conference while Florida had the best.

The days in this permanent rivalry are likely numbered. It will end with the addition of a New SEC West member.

I like playing UF every year, but we should be on a H/A rotation with 3 SECE teams. This allows you to play H/A vs SECE team in 4 years instead of the 6 it does now.

We want to play a game in Florida every other year. That is prime recruiting area for us.

I love the permenant game with UF. We need to keep it. Tougher games are much more entertaining and are just better for the team, program and fans. Plus I live in Florida so it affords me the opportunity to see my team every other year.

Had this game not been LSU's permanent East rivalry since the division split in 1992, LSU may very well have had 2 to 4 more appearances in Atlanta and perhaps a few more conference titles

I agree. I look forward and fear this game every year.

historically, LSU owned Florida prior to Spurrier

Not really.

From the first game in '37 to the 1989 season the series record was 18-15-3 for a .542 win%, 16-15-3 since WWII (.515 win%). Not exactly 'ownership'.

Series record by decade:
30s: 1-0
40s: 1-0
50s: 3-3-1
60s: 4-4
70s: 5-3-1
80s: 4-5-1
90s: 1-9
00s: 4-6

I scanned the first 2 pages of the OP and haven't seen this addressed yet.

2 more appearences yes, but I think 3 or 4 more is out of the question. I looked at the years LSU had any likely chance.

Assuming that you replace a loss to UF since 1992 with a Win against a lesser opponent:

1996 - West division tie / replace loss to UF with a win = SEC Champ Game vs. UF team on the way to a National Title.

1997 - West division tie / doesn't matter because LSU beat UF this year.

2000 - LSU = 3 conference losses / replace loss to UF with a win = tie Auburn with 2 conference losses / Auburn wins the tie breaker with the head to head win.

2002 - West division tie / doesn't matter because LSU beat UF. Arkansas didn't play UF that year. Though UF wasn't great in 2002, they were a bowl team and could have beat Arky to push LSU into the SEC Champ game.

2006 - Here, you have a legit reason. West division tie with Arky / replace loss to UF with a win = 1 loss LSU, West Champ and likely playing for a chance to go to the BCS championship. ETA: And guess what, LSU would have to play UF.

1996 = Yes - only to play UF in the SEC Champ Game
2006 = Yes - Only to play UF in the SEC Champ Game
2002 = Maybe if Arky had to play UF and lost.

ETA: This gives weight to the "to be the best, you have to beat the best" crowd. The 2 times LSU would have gone to Atlanta because of not playing UF, would have resulted in playing them for the SEC Championship.

My problem with the perm rival in another division is this:

LSU's REAL rival from the East was actually Kentucky. Before the SEC split into divisions, LSU had played Kentucky more than any other "new" Eastern Division school, including Florida and Georgia.

If the whole point was to have a "permanent rival" then why weren't the 41 games played vs UK more important than the 35 games played vs Florida prior to 1992?

I think especially in my age bracket (25-30) Florida is seen as a huge rival. Between the beatings they gave us when I was a kid and the great games over the past decade, I look forward to the Florida game and the Bama game the most every year.

Wrong. It would be easier for LSU to win a nation championship if we had a easier schedule. Like was stated we have lost half of the last 10 games against Florida. That is 5 years with a loss that we might not have had, had we played a weaker opponent.

I would say this proves my point. In those years, LSU was not able to beat one of the best (Florida), and therefore was not the best.
I don't give a frick about getting to the NC game based on an "easier schedule". If that is what we have to hope for, then we are a bunch of pussies. You are only going to win NCs (at best) a couple times a decade, so we might as well have some regular season games worth a shite.

Probably because it's a opinion and not a fact

the under 15 crowd around here can run around screaming about beating the best to be the best....please save that crap for the ESPN talking heads

Again, LSU and UK played more times vs each other than any other LSU vs East team

so if the SEC "spin" was about rivals, than how come they were not LSU's perm rival?

I got no problem with UF, keep them as perm I don't care...

BordyLSU nailed it. This has only impacted LSU's chance at a west title twice, and in reality, only once has it impacted our chance at a conference (and national) championship - 2006. (you don't seriously believe, after the 56-13 beatdown, DiNardo's '96 team was going to circle the wagons against Danny W and Co, especially when they had the red-arse for getting beat by FSU the week before do you?)

Which is why the '06 game was so frustrating. Auburn had lost earlier in the day to Arkansas and we were in the driver's seat. then came the inexplicable no-TD of Jacob Hester, the jump pass, the fumbled 2nd half kickoff, the batted-ball interception, and Florida was off and running to Tempe.

Why exactly is it that someone would want their team to be a bag full of pussies and back down from tough competition?

Shouldn't you want your team to line up every tough opponent and give their best to bitch slap them into knowing that they just faced the best?

Sometimes you're not the best, but you have to play the best to know for sure...
