We went to Gulf Brew this weekend, so we stayed overnight in Lafayette. A friend recommended the French Press for breakfast the next morning so we took that suggestion. French Press is on E. Vermillion, downtown, and is a fairly small place. I found it odd that a place that serves breakfast didn't open until 9 on a Sunday but we didn't get there until about 920ish anyways. For only being open for like 20 minutes the place was packed. We had 4 guys and even though there was no one else waiting, most of the tables didn't have food yet so the wait was going to be a long time. We opted to take a seat at the bar and eat up there. Nothing wrong with the seating, the bar was really nice and so was the bartender. Loud atmosphere but not overpowering like Franks in Baton Rouge is.

Since the place was called the French Press, I opted for a french press of coffee (sm 3.50, lg 5.50). I wasn't terribly impressed but it wasn't bad coffee. I was expecting a little more, I make better coffee at the house. Still cool that it came as an entire press though.

The menu started off with traditional breakfast fare but that is not the reason we were told to come here. I chose to go with grits and grillades which came with 2 eggs and the option to get fried oysters. Obviously I went with the oyster option and figured that poached eggs would be a good choice. Regular price was 8.50 and oysters added 3.00 to the meal. I thought it was a fantastic plate of food overall. The grits and grillades were really tasty. Perfectly cooked grits and a nice chopped/shredded pork stew. Slight tang of tomatoes in the sauce. The eggs were perfectly poached, probably the best poached eggs I have ever had. Surprisingly though the oysters stole the show. Amazing flavor to the oysters and perfectly crisp. Great breakfast.

A buddy got their "Sweet Baby Breesus" which is 3 biscuit sliders topped with Stein's syrup, bacon, and fried boudin. Served with a side of cheddar grits. I didn't taste them but he thought they were great.

Once we left at about 1040 there was a 45 minute wait. Great option for breakfast even if the coffee was blah.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I think the breakfast at this place is great.

BTW, it's called the French Press because it was a printing shop.

Looks awesome. Had a great time in Laffy. I saw you post this yesterday and was jealous. I was on my way to FP for dinner sat night when my buddy decided he wanted to try out Agave instead.

Agave was great, but we spent so much money buying drinks while waiting (1.5 hours to get our food b/c we got there minutes after a 20 top :dammit:). While there were empty tables at FP.

ETA: Is that mozzarella?

You missed out. Their breakfast is pretty damn good, but their dinner will blow your doors off. But you still probably saved money by eating at Agave....FP ain't cheap.

I know. I've been once (but thankfully didn't have to pay). Still I was excited to go back. I don't think I saved much b/c between me and the wife, we spent over $40 on drinks during the wait.

ETA: Of course knowing my wife, she would've had a couple glasses of wine. Sometimes my FIL's love for great wine can really come back and bite me in the arse.

I didnt realize that you stayed. We were downtown for a while. Someone recommended that we try Trynd downtown. Food wasn't bad but atmosphere is terrible, at least in my opinion. Food was expensive as well. Should have hit up a burger joint.

Should hit up a Pamplona next time. I would have recommended it but I couldn't think of restaurants downtown for the life of me...and I was trying so hard too . Like I said, I had a great time.

We weren't planning on staying it just kinda happened while we were leaving. I was planning on going out to the tap room after but was dead when I got home.

Wow, impressive. I showed my aunt/uncle what they were missing out on and they left drool stains on the floor. Immediatly responded with, "well i know what restaurant we're trying out next weekend"

French Press is one of the best breakfast places in lafayette. I haven't tried the sweet baby Bressus yet. It looks amazing.
