There was a lot leading up to that game. Going into the 1979 season, many folks were starting to grumble about replacing Coach McClendon. This was largely due to him being unable to beat Bama (which few SEC teams did in those days.) There were folks that felt like Coach needed a monster season to save his job. The Tigers came out of the gate quickly, winning easily at Colorado and at home against Rice. The game started to take on the feel of a litmus test. If the Tigers could pull out a win against the #1 ranked Trojans, it was felt that it could propel them into an incredible season. As it turned out, it seemed like the Tigers never really recovered, though it could be said that an 8 - 4 record that year wasn't bad, given that 3 of their losses came to teams that finished #1 (Bama) #2 (USC) and #6 (Florida State) that year.
I was fortunate enough to attend both USC - LSU games. You could not have had a more profound contrast between the two. 1979 at Tiger Stadium was a mass insane asylum masquerading as a nighttime football game. 1984 at the LA Coliseum was a blase' daytime affair played in front of thousands of empty seats and a crowd that was mostly silent, save for the 5,000 or so LSU fans that made the trip.

For those of us who had to listen by radio there was the voice of the Tigers John Ferguson along with Walter Hill and Doug Moreau.

I was a soph at LSU, yes that game was the real deal. Unbelievable atmosphere. As I recall, a hot and sticky night. Which makes now seeing LSU fans streaming out of TS in the 3rd Q very sad.

Don't be fooled by the biggest myth in LSU FB. It was a clear facemask 15 yards not a brush. Paul's entire torso was pulled via the mask.

This is true, although the RG and RT were on their way to standing up when the ball was snapped. It was movement though.
I listened on the radio and could not even tell USC scored the winning TD until they kicked off because it was so loud

No, it was Charles White for about 185 yards. He won the hiessman that year. Allen, who won it two years later was a freshman or soph full back. USC was Tailback U in that era. Simpson, Garrett, Anthony Davis, Rickey Bell, Charles White, Allen. They ran "student body right" and left against opponents who pretty much knew the play was coming.

Once we beat USC in 1984, we got in the top 20 and stayed in for the rest of Arnspargars 3 years.
Getting back to 79, another great game and loss that year was our 0-3 loss to a great Bama team. Probably the greatest defensive games in modern Tiger history. That Bama team was also #1.

As many good tailbacks as USC had in those days, this guy was my favorite one out of all of them. My 2nd fav team back in the day as USC. My dad's still pissed about me liking them because because of the outcome/circumstances of the 79 LSU/So Cal game.

My dad, who's been going to games since '58 or so, says that is the only game he never saw ANY tickets for sale outside the stadium before the game.
It was only people looking for tickets.
Can't imagine that now.
I listened to it on the radio...all I remember is a constant roar all game long.

I was sophomore that year also.In those days students got in the game with student ID - no student tickets. It was general admission first come first serve for the students. I was in line at the student gate 4 hours or so before kickoff and it was packed & electric all afternoon before we even got into the stadium.
The only thing I could compare it to during my years at LSU was the last basketball game of the season that year (or next) on a Sunday afternoon against Kentucky for the SEC title. Kyle Macy hit a jumper at the buzzer to win it - but thousands of us students camped out on the Assembly Center concrete concourse the night before. It was wild all night long.

Can't imagine that now.
UGA '03 and Florida '07 gave this a run for its money. Saw lots of fingers up in the air and very few tickets held up, if any.

Yep, me too. Camped out on the Assembly Center ramp. Sat/stood on the 6th row, as usual. In those days the Assembly Center was packed

Where we lost that game:
LSU was up 9-3 and had a first and goal at the USC 2 yard line - I think early in the 4th quarter if I'm not mistaken.
But after a penalty and an ill-advised pass play resulting in a sack, we had to kick a FG to put us up 12-3.
IMO we score to make it 16-3 and the momentum uf the crowd would have pulled us through.
Of course, the ref standing right in front of TWO USC OL moving before the snap and nothing called makes my blood boil to this day.

Ol' Tangerine is quick to point out the facemask, and that's fine.
But heaven knows it's so blatantly obvious that it should have been offsetting penalties.

No, once the o-line moved, the play was dead. The facemask, even if it happened, never happened.
