Is 2011 our best chance for a "double title?"

I was thinking this morning that 2011 might be the best chance we've ever had for the much desired double championship: LSU and the Saints, that is.
I would argue that the previous two best chances were in 1987 and 2006. You might also add 2003, 2007 and 2009 since one or the other team actually won a title in those years, but the Saints were mired in mediocrity under Haslett in 2003, the Saints defense just wasn't good enough to win a title in 2007, and the Tigers were just recovering from the Malveto disaster and RP11 dismissal in 2009.
This year, the Saints have lived through the Super Bowl hangover and seem to have improved their defense in the offseason, and the Tigers are looking as strong as they have since the 2006-07 run. Could it actually happen?
It's a shame the Super Bowl isn't in New Orleans until 2013 because both titles could be won right at home.

I think we were saying the same thing in '07 and '08.

Definitely a chance and would be amazing but the odds are long indeed.

Let's just win one first

At first I thought you meant back to back with LSU, but yeah I've actually been saying this too. Both have leadership and great potential. It very well could happen.

Well, that's my point. The two teams have combined for three titles in the last eight years, so the potential is definitely there and is higher than it's ever been.

In Vegas, Saints are 17-1, LSU is 9-1 to win titles...
Could be a nice payday if all works out...

I should check to see what kind of odds they would give me to bet on the combo platter?

With the Saints picking up Ingram I'm excited for this season. As long as LSU can get rid of Jefferson we are definitely the favorites. I'm looking forward to it!

Saints aren't winning a title this year.
LSU very well may.

I actually told a couple friends of mine this a couple months ago. I figure both have an excellent chance of doing it. I think it will be easier for LSU though, since they won't have to go through the playoffs. Saints MUST get home field in the playoffs to have a chance, IMO.

Obviously, I'm not saying I think this WILL happen, only that if it ever was going to happen, this year appears to be the best chance we've ever had. 2006 was probably the second best chance, but when LSU turned the ball over 5 times at Florida and Tebow decided to unveil the jump pass against us, our chances were killed. And, the Saints were not yet tough enough as the Bears demonstrated up in Chicago.

I just love how you're so sure they won't. Reasoning? I'd love to hear it.

How crazy would that be? Man, a $10 parlay bet on bodog pays out $2,540.

Maybe, but the odds are better than Alabumma doing it

I am season ticket holder for my hometown NFL team, but I still have to say that I find an LSU NC to be far more exhilarating than a Super Bowl trip. In large part, it is because a college national championship seems so much rarer and more improbable. In the NFL, 32 teams compete for a championship. In college, there are 119 Division 1-A teams, about half of which have a legitimate chance to win the title at the start of the season. In college, near perfection is required to hold aloft the crystal trophy. Two losses is typically fatal. Last year, in the NFL, the Lombardi Trophy was soled by the mediocre hands of a team that went 10-6 in the regular season. Maybe it is just me, but college football seems the stuff of resplendent legend and bone-marrow pride, whereas the NFL is more of a calculated workaday TV spectacle. I enjoy them both tremendously, but if I could only chose one...

Be careful with your excitement over Ingram. I think we're all excited for him, but remember there's a lockout and he's a rookie. There's going to be a HUGE learning curve and he's going to have to pick it up QUICK. I wouldn't expect to see him blocking a whole lot this season and limited pass catching. I'd venture to say our lineup will be (in this order) PT, Ingram, and Ivory for our power/up-the-gut backs and Reggie doing.. well, Reggie.
But yes, I think 2011 can be a very special year for Louisiana football.
