He's listed at 5'9", 180 pounds. I have not seen him up close, but I estimate he is no taller than 5'8", and perhaps 170 to 175 pounds.

In his true freshman season, he had 50 total tackles, 28 unassisted, 7 1/2 tackles for loss, 3 1/2 sacks, 1 interception and forced 3 fumbles.

That has to be some kind of record for productivity points for a true freshman defensive player who did not start (at least not the whole year).

By way of comparsion, as a true freshman PP7 had 41 total tackles, 32 unassisted, 1 1/2 tackle for loss, 0 sacks, 1 interception and forced a single fumble.

I was a fan all year, but some of that was the subjective rooting for the little guy and the fact he made tackles all over the field, from wherever he lined up. Upon objective review, the numbers do not lie.

ETA: It appears the lsusports.net stats have not been updated with the Cotton Bowl stats. Including the Cotton Bowl, Mathieu finished the year with 2 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. I'm not sure if the numbers I listed above for tackles included his CB performance either, which would have added 6 UA tackles, 1 assisted (7 total), and an additional TFL. But, now I even question Peterson's freshman stats.

Maybe the numbers lie somewhat?

He's a smaller Jerico Nelson...that said, I like him as a player, just not as a CB

I'm a huge T-Mat fan and I'm hoping he has a great year.

Remember though, you can't compare those numbers to PP7 or any other starting CB b/c the position he played was like a hybrid type. He has not had to be a true corner yet. I'm hoping he becomes a lock down CB, but we do have to see him as a true CB first.

He caused three or four other interceptions. No stat for that.

He is they best true freshmen defensive back I can ever recall seeing. Looking forward to seeing him a few more years.
