at more than it was designed for (>100%), but holding back on opening up Morganza (<20%)? It seems like a risky proposition to me. Like they have more faith in ORCS than they do in Morganza.

Current % of Levee Capacity vs. actual flow

Politics. Are you not upset that Bonnet Carre is running above 100%?

I'd guess people in the way of the Morganza waters are quite happy about it.

It may be that the Corps is putting through the required 30% at 620kcfs, while the hydroelectric facility is putting through the balance.

If Bonnet Carre fails at >100% (it won't), the river will eventually go down below the spillway and it can be repaired. If ORCS fails, we have big big problems...

I dont know if its overloaded. The Red River is bringing no water and the Atchafalaya wont even come close to flood stage above Butte La Rose.

I have not read it closely yet, but I think the Corps has the right to make the hydroelectric plant take more water if it thinks that is necessary. LINK

the corps clearly hates the whites in baton rouge and new orleans. that is why they are trying to make the river change course

How would Morganza even fail? Eventually the river would go down and stop sending water into the forebay.

Right. Nobody I have read thinks a channel could form there, unlike ORCS.

Agreed-which is why I don't understand their point of view from an engineering standpoint. This thing almost failed the last time it had LESS water. Putting it to the test might not be the best way to spread the risk around. Politically- sure I can see them keeping the minimum amount of Morganza bays closed to keep good press for those not familiar with the situation. However, is that good press worth keeping Old River at max capacity (or worse) for an extended amount of time? To me it just seems like a risky move.

PS Has anyone else noticed that this is the only way to monitor any of the actual flows in the Miss. River basin? Even NOAA took down all of their flows from all of their hydrographs after taking down the tabular data some time ago.

I had been monitoring the river stage and flow for several weeks, so I did in fact notice this, beginning last Saturday, and thought it was rather curious. Equipment failure, or is it time to break out the tinfoil hat?
Anybody have any knowledge about those gages?

I still think it is because they are sluicing around the hydroelectric, but who the hell knows.
