Heres the deal, Yes Gandalf the Grey 'lost' that one encounter with Sauromon but as they are both deities they could both out wizard Dumbledore. Just because they don't go around casting spells doesn't mean they aren't powerful enough to do so. They would rape in the world of Rowling.

Also remember, When Sauroman and Gandalf fought, they were in Orthanc, Sauroman's center of power, and he had set the trap for Gandalf.

I haven't read past the 1st HP book, but based on Dumbledore of the movies, he just can't compare to Gandalf. Hell, Dumbledore is portrayed as clueless to what is happening under his own roof. 3 wet behind the ears children have to solve all the mysteries and fight the world's most evil wizard.

Gandalf takes on a Balrog and wins, even though he dies in the process. He's reborn, leads a world war and faces down the Witch King of Angmar ( in the book he gets the better of them, unlike the movie).

Also, Tolkein's handling of magic is so much better than Rowling's. It's a subtle, ominous, mysterious force, terrible and dangerous, so not often used by it's wielders. As opposed to Rowling's magic which is commonplace, overused, and cast by shouting some form of pidgen latin phrase akin to "HOCUS POCUS".

not to deviate too far from the original subject but this is an interesting point, and very true. Gandalf won't even allow himself to touch the ring of power, though he could take it and wield great power the likes of which would turn Dumbledore's bowels to water...

Very true.
