Just purchased all 5 seasons of The Wire from Bestbuy today (they made me an offer I couldn't refuse). I've never seen a minute of the show, but I have read nothing but good things here for years. I hope you guys were right.

Out of all the HBO Series from that time, The Wire is the only one I haven't seen yet. I've seen zero episodes from this show.

I've seen every episode of Deadwood, Oz, Six Feet Under, Big Love, Rome, and the Sopranos.

Based on the praise it gets from the Movie/TV board, when I finally get to this show, it had better be fricking AMAZING.

I was hooked on season 1 after the first episode. It's not a slow season at all to me. It builds very well.

I have watched most of HBO's great shows with the exception of 2 or 3. The Wire is by miles better than anything I have ever watched on television.

Be excited. You have about 60 hours of greatness in your hands now. I guarantee you'll finish the last episode of season 5 before 2 weeks is up. I once watched ten episodes (during season 4) in one day.

Season 2 is VERY different from season 1. So be forwarned as people are initially put off by that but in reality its one of the best seasons.

Rank:

4 3 2 1 5

Seasons 3 and 4 are the greatest 1-2 punch of any show I've ever seen. Its just nonstop awesomeness

I just wrapped up the first 4 seasons last nite

it's the first time I've watched them in years. There was so much I forgot, and it's even better the second and third time around.

And the rank is:

2, 1, 3, 4, 5

Only way to watch it is lock yourself in a dark room for about a week. You'll find yourself making excuses to not sleep when each episode is over.

2 is GREAT. Many do not like it, but it has such a complex a) b) storyline going. You're introduced to a brand new cast and it may frustrate you momentarily, but it's -- in the end -- so amazingly done. The Docks crew are the best of the newly introduced casts, IMO. What else is great is that you have the Stringer/Avon story still going on and also the tie-in with the docks to Prop Joe to Stringer...it's beautiful. Nicky and Frank may never see or know who Stringer is but they are as tied to him as they are the Greeks. BRAVO season.

I'd rank them:

4, 2, 3, 1, 5.

what is up with everyone's praise of season 4?

is it just because people like stories about kids? Because otherwise, it wasnt that compelling. It's still better than 95% of most TV out there, but up against the other seasons, it fell short in story and acting
