Hornet's Magic Number

I thought I heard the Hornet's magic number to make the playoffs was 3 before tonight game against the Pacers. Can anyone confirm this?
If so, could they clinch a playoff spot with a victory against Houston on Wednesday night? They would hold a 3-1 series advantage against Houston if they ended the season tied with them and Houston currently is the only team outside the first 8 that have a chance to make the playoffs.
