LSU Self Imposes Football Recruiting and Scholarship Restrictions

LSU has self-imposed restrictions on its football program as a result of an internal investigation that revealed violations of NCAA rules, as announced earlier this year.
The self-imposed restrictions include a reduction in official visits for the 2010-11 academic year, a reduction of initial scholarship recipients by two for the 2011-12 incoming class, a reduction of the overall scholarship counters by two for the 2011-12 academic year and a reduction of the total number of National Letter of Intent/SEC scholarship papers that can be offered to prospective student-athletes by two for the February 2011 signing date.
"LSU took quick and thorough action when we discovered these violations, and we are hopeful the NCAA will ultimately agree with our assessment of this case," Chancellor Michael Martin says. "The reports to the NCAA and SEC and our decision to self-impose penalties are the culmination of many months of arduous work by our compliance office. and I am confident their thorough examination of this case has produced appropriate sanctions for the football program."
LSU reported the violations to the NCAA and SEC in two reports. The first report was delivered to the NCAA and SEC in March 2010, and focused on recruiting activities involving one assistant coach and one student-athlete. Before that report was submitted, the two involved individuals both left the University, and the student-athlete never participated in a game for the Tiger football team.
In addition, during the course of the investigation, LSU discovered other violations pertaining to improper telephone calls between non-coach administrative football staff members at LSU and prospective student-athletes, their parents or their high school coaches. Those violations are detailed in a report submitted to the NCAA and SEC in October 2010.

WTF how did this shite happen?!

I'm skimming through the report, and it all seems to be minor stuff. The prohibited conversations/phone calls all look like they involved administrative type stuff, like applying for admission, getting a dorm room, getting high school transcripts from the school, scheduling official visits, etc. I understand the need for some of the rules, but none of this seems all that big of a deal.

Seems to be more self-imposed penalties than necessary given what it was.

And Auburn and Cam play for a National Championship.

I commend LSU for doing this. Not many programs would punish themselves for breaking the rules. Just goes to show how far apart, ethic wise, we are with some programs (cough..cough..Auburn).

the rant has such a selective memory.
this isn't a big deal at all. it's not like we paid 200K to an all world QB.

so does miles still run a clean program?

Relax. This simply all stems from when Lester Earl and Zeph Zinnsman took Amp Hill out to eat at Ruth's Chris.

this has been going on in the background and i've been wondering for some time when it would come to a head. however this is the first i've heard of the "other" violations uncovered during the investigation.
hopefully the ncaa looks and agrees we found everything and our self-imposed sanctions are appropriate. until then it is still brewing.

so when are the Aubbies going to self impose restrictions????

These violations are due mainly to the ignorance of the coaching staff regarding compliance rules.
Also there appears to have been sloppy record keeping. Sort of like a time management issue?

Two things come to mind while reading this.
1.) the buyout of Miles' contract is caput
2.) the strength and conditioning coach for the Jets acted alone.

When I read the headlines I thought the same as many that LSU over self-imposed. Given the number of calls, and the percentage of players involved, I understand why. However, the NCAA recently said they are not concerned about calls as much because of the email loophole.
I don't see the NCAA upping the penalty any.
