| *Prayers Needed*: Local BrM/LSU grad lost at sea *UPDATED* (Posted on 11/30/10 at 4:49 pm)
29 November 2010 12:00AM The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to search for an American and three Marshall Islanders lost in a 13-foot fiberglass boat Friday afternoon. The group left Bikarej Island in Arno Atoll about 3 p.m. Friday for a 15-mile trip to Majuro, the capital — normally about a 90-minute open ocean trip between the two nearby atolls. When the boat failed to show up, government officials launched a search Saturday but did not find any trace of the boat, Junan Nimoto, an official in the disaster response office of the Marshall Islands government, said early Sunday morning. American James de Brueys of New Orleans (BM '06), Louisiana is onboard the small boat that has a 40hp engine, Nimoto said. Debrueys is a volunteer teacher with the Harvard-based WorldTeach program that supplies about 40 teachers a year to the Marshall Islands Ministry of Education, most of whom are placed in remote public elementary schools to boost English language skills of young students. Three Marshall Islanders are on the boat with Debrueys, according to Nimoto. Debrueys has been working as a teacher at Bikarej Elementary School since August. It is unlikely that the boat has either a radio or other safety equipment on board, according to local officials. “I spoke with the U.S. Ambassador’s representative Tom Maus on Saturday afternoon requesting assistance from the Coast Guard,” Nimoto said. Lt. Cmdr. George McKenzie, who heads an Australian navy group that provides technical assistance to the Marshall Islands Sea Patrol, said Saturday that the country’s patrol vessel “Lomor” was diverted from a trip to the northern islands to begin searching for the small boat on Saturday afternoon. By nightfall, however, the “Lomor” had not spotted the small boat. The government’s airline was to dispatch one of its two planes to begin searching at first light on Sunday and “Lomor” will continue searching, Nimoto said. Boats travel the short ocean distance between Arno and Majuro on a daily basis, bringing passengers, fish and other cargo into the capital. “We will see what the Coast Guard can provide on Sunday,” Nimoto said. Earlier this week, the Coast Guard concluded an unsuccessful weeklong search for a fisherman on a 12-foot outrigger canoe who was lost two weeks ago at Ailinglaplap Atoll in the central Marshall Islands. “The canoe washed up on the ocean side of Majuro on Thursday,” Nimoto said. “The canoe was positively identified as the one lost at Ailinglaplap.” It is about 180 miles between the two atolls. There was no sign of the 50-year-old fisherman who had been on board and who is believed to have drowned. ETA: Posted at 18:10 on 01 December, 2010 UTC A body has been found near the Marshall Islands and is believed to be one of four passengers from a small boat that went missing in rough seas Friday afternoon and later capsized. The Police have confirmed the body of a male was located 32 kilometres south of Arno Atoll in the Marshall Islands yesterday. But a search official says the body is so badly decomposed that they cannot even tell its race. He says officials are hoping to get the body to a hospital in Majuro for identification. ETA: Posted at 03:23 on 02 December, 2010 UTC Our correspondent, Giff Johnson, says the body is that of Anwel Anwel, who is said to have been about 20 years old. He says the body was some distance from where the empty boat was found. “A body was found many miles from off Arno Atoll in the open ocean, by one of the search boats. A fair distance away, it’s in the same general vicinity, but from the way it was explained to me, it was a few miles away. It’s pretty remarkable.” Giff Johnson says the man is being buried later this afternoon by family. The coast guard has now increased its presence in the search by flying in a second C-130 aircraft from Honolulu to join the air and sea search for. ETA: Posted at 18:14 on 02 December, 2010 UTC The second body of four people lost at sea in the Marshall Islands a week ago has been found by a United States Coast Guard plane following an all-day search. Hope for finding any of the remaining boat passengers alive is fading as the search enters its seventh day and U.S. Coast Guard planes are temporarily out of service. The Coast Guard says the body of a pregnant female was spotted floating 80 miles east of Majuro using radar. A patrol vessel is to be dispatched at first light to attempt to pick up the body of Baby Kaiko, who was reported to be seven months pregnant. The body of high school student Anwel Anwel was brought back to Majuro yesterday after being found by one of about a dozen vessels that joined in an intensive search for survivors. ETA: Friday, December 3, 2010 00:12 The Coast Guard has called off the search for LSU alumnus and Chimes Restaurant employee James de Brueys, according to his sister Simone. James de Brueys was lost in the Pacific Ocean on Nov. 25, and Coast Guard officials had said Wednesday they were still searching for him. But a post on James de Brueys' Facebook page by Steven de Brueys, James' brother, said the Coast Guard had called off the search. "We are doing everything within our power to convince them otherwise by going through Bobby Jindal and Mary [Landrieu]," the post says. "They have found the pregnant woman's body but were not able to retrieve the body, because the Australian Navy had to go back for another assignment. Just pray that we can convince the Navy and Coastguard to continue to search for my brother." Simone de Brueys said in a text message to The Daily Reveille late Thursday night the Coast Guard said they found the body of a pregnant woman and a teenage boy, but not the bodies of her brother or his host father. She said the Coast Guard said "its impossible for them to be alive," and they would continue to search today, but that was all they could do. She said the Coast Guard told them Thursday morning they were calling off the search, but she said "we were just hoping they would find him today." Rory, not sure who you are but James is my Brother-in-law and I appreciate the thoughts and prayers. His mother received a call a few hours ago reporting that the boat was spotted overturned 12 miles north of the main island Majuro. The search is now being focused on islands that may be in swimming distance. I must say it put a lil smile on my face when I googled his name and one of the first websites it sent me to was my favorite website, tigerdroppings. Again thanks for all the prayers and thoughts. I do not know the answer to this. I/we were never given any indication that rough sees were in play, but i have no clue how rough it needs to be to flip a 13-15 ft fiberglass boat.

From the Reveille: LSU alumnus and Chimes employee goes missing in Pacific Ocean LINK I think plenty of people on this board would recognize James from the Chimes even if they don't know him personally.

Shit, that is all over the news here in Hawaii. They sent out some coast guard people from Barber's point to look for them the past couple days. I gotta say, they are idiots for making that trip in a 13 ft boat. Anybody who has ever been in a boat out here knows you don't go in a channel like that with that size of a boat and at this time of year with the crazy currents and big waves. Best of luck to them and i hope they are found soon.

Capsized boat was found 12 miles off the coast with the 4 boaters missing. Hopefully they had life jackets and got in a current heading towards land. Best of luck to them.
