ESPN Special to air Tuesday at 6 p.m. CDT
ESPN will present SportsCenter Special: “Gruden’s Champ Camp - A Visit with the Super Saints” Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m. CDT (re-airing at 10 p.m. CDT on ESPN2).
The one-hour prime-time special includes an all-access look at the Saints’ championship season through the words of Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees and head coach Sean Payton. Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden traveled to the Saints facility at the start of the Saints’ training camp for interviews and film sessions with the winning duo.
Together, Brees and Payton offer an in-depth evaluation of the entire season, reviewing key plays (such as the onside kick against the Colts in the Super Bowl) and notable games, discussing team personnel and also looking ahead to the 2010 season.
Champ Camp will also offer coverage of the Saints’ first training camp practice including “miked up” audio of Payton and rarely seen video of Gruden and Payton when they coached together with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Sitting down in the film room with Drew Brees and Sean Payton was a great experience,” said Gruden in an ESPN press release. “Having coached against both in that division, I have enormous respect for them. They work extremely hard and they are two of the most creative minds in the league. They set the tone for that football team by working so well together – as well as any quarterback-coach tandem in the league. The Saints practices are also as intense as any I have seen.”
Gruden helped land Payton his first NFL job as the Eagles quarterbacks coach in 1997 when Gruden served as the team’s offensive coordinator. In Payton’s book “HOME TEAM,” he credits the Eagles job and Gruden’s tutelage as “laying the foundation” for his NFL coaching career.
