I don't mean this in a condescending way,

Your explanation was perfect. Cool, you need to head to NO and try Domenica and A Mano. By far the two best Italian places in LA. For real Italian, not bastardized versions.

I hope too soon, but probably not until late summer at the earliest. I'm getting in the car tomorrow and taking a week to drive to San Francisco, where I will pick up the wife and kids at the airport and continue on to Yountville where we will be hanging out for a month. Going to play golf a few times on my way to CA and will begin stuffing my face early next week and continue for the next six weeks or so. If I haven't eaten myself in to oblivion by the end of July, we will be going to N.O. later this summer for a weekend of gluttony. I will be checking in with you and the other N.O. experts for advice.

you know, as you develop a pallate you'll find out that ONE place is never the overall "BEST" it depends on what you want to eat and there has to be some discrimination in your taste. I mean you learn what place does a dish like YOU like it and if they are good, they will tailor it to your taste if you ask like no salt etc etc. Lafayette is great for that because other than the chain joints, most places really want you to enjoy what they serve you. May sound like pompas BS but I have been here since 1972 and I believe that AND it is not just Lafayette........
