Now for something completely different, have we figured out why Ben was able to kill Jacob, but MiB seems to be indestructible?
that thought just popped in the ole noggin.

Be cool if tonight they have a scene with a cave or lighthouse that has two names on it (Jacob and MIB) with number 1 and 2 besides them.

Game theory works.

Jacob let Ben kill him, but I believe he could have stopped him if he chose. Because he believes in allowing people their "free will", he let himself die. MIB is not going to let that happen because he wants to "escape".

I think so too. I think he was telling the truth when he told Jack he could kill him at any time and he couldn't do anything about it. I just think it won't count(in the "game") or he'll get penalized for it. But I think he is physically able to do it. Otherwise, why keep reminding him of the "rules?" If he can't physcially kill them, why waste your breath constantly letting him know about it? He'd find out soon enough when they didn't die.
eta--again, I'm not sure if any of this will wind up being germane or not

Hopefully we will see MIB try to test the rules and what happens as a result tonight when we see their origin story.

I am not so sure that Jacob only died because he let Ben kill him. I mean he didn't put a fight and he may have been able to beat the shite out of Ben, but I don't think he is invincible.
MIB seems to be like superman (indestructable, but maybe has a weakness we don't know about), and Jacob like Clark Kent when he forefeits his powers. He can fight back (like he did with Richard on the beach), but he can get f'ed up by the right person in the diner.

The scene in Superman II when he goes back the the diner and kicks that dudes arse then slides him down the counter is one of my favorites of all time.
"I've been....working out."

It was kind of a childhood fantasy to be able to able take a dude out like that. It is an all-time favorite of mine as well

No way. The producers did not have a clue about Jacob or MIB or candidates until beginning of season 3 and even then it wasn't fully fleshed out.
They did know that the light and dark theme would be personified by two individuals. They may not have known the specifics, like the Others relationship to these people (or really if the Others were technological or savages... hell they still haven't come clean on this since they'll use technology whenever and will sometimes refuse to) or that the Monster would become the man who represented darkness. And I've pretty much always doubted that that they had no idea about what the Monster was and what the Polar Bear was doing on the Island, since they came clean early on that when Locke and Boone first discovered the Hatch, the writers had no idea what was in the hatch.

candidates did not kill jacob. Ben did.
The candidates still needed to be around though, particularly Locke. He needed Ben to kill Locke off the Island in order to convince Ben and the Others that Locke rose from the dead. Once Ben had killed Jacob, he could proceed in killing the candidates.

He could have easily stopped Ben just by telling him he was sorry about Alex's death and that he thought he did a good job as leader. When Ben asked "What about me?", Jacob just spit in his face and Ben took it as Jacob thought his suffering was meaningless. That was the last straw for Ben, because even before walking in there he was very apprehensive on killing Jacob, even though he hated him.
