Highly unlikely that the well was flowing outside of the wellhead/BOP. If that were the case the ROV would clearly to be able to see that. Its likely leaking from a couple places in the damaged riser. The sum of all those leaks is likely 5000bopd

I think we all understand that but the question was a hypothetical.

what would be the estimate if the well was free flowing around or outside of the BOP?

HOW MANY MORE THINGS CAN THEY TRY TO CLOSE THIS DAMN FLOW?????

Reading thru this thread it sounds like they are doing the following:
1. Still working to close the BOP.
2. Maybe already doing or planning on cutting the riser above the
BOP and installing a valve.
3. Getting ready to drill a relief well to cement off the original well.

Here is an animation of the oil spill growth. (as of now)

I would love to know how they plan on doing this

I have no idea I would like to know too. There was a post of the poly board about it. It is quoted in this thread a few pages back.

This is the interview that the survivor talks about testing the BOPs the day before the accident. I found the interview quite interesting. There are 2 parts.

quote: from page 51:
I just received word that the additional use of an accumulator failed to close the hydraulic ram in the BOP. Apparently the hydraulic rams in the BOP are damaged. The rams are used to shear the riser and cut off flow. Apparently the step that is being taken now sub-sea is to cut the riser pipe and install a "smart flange" with a valve assembly. Once the mechanical flange is attached to the remaining riser the valved can be closed to shut off flow. This is easier said than done. If you've ever seen the movie Hell Fire with John Wayne then you'll have a good idea of how it's done on land. Now add 5,000 feet of water and 5,000 bbls/day flow to contend with and this task is extremely difficult (and slow). Let's just hope they (oceaneering) can get it done

Thanks a bunch for posting that. That really starts to clear up how everything went down.

Ok. What are we looking at there? I'm on my phone and can't see the pic real well. Looks like an rov at the horizon bop but what is the significance of the pic?

Their setting up to pressure the shear rams closed. And the date.

Pretty informative interview. Funny none of this is on the Main Stream Media. All they want to talk about is the oil spill. The oil spill is almost a moot point until the flow is stopped.

Not sure what you mean by back pressure (wellhead pressure??) but reservoir pressure at that depth was likely somewhere around 15000psi
back pressure= pressure on the other side of the flow point. Right now it would be over pressure from the water column. So the string would go like this: 15kpsi formation pressure -25,000 feet of elevation losses, -piping losses in 25,000 feet of pipe, -losses from kinks and other restrictions, -2,200 psi to overcome to flow into the water. (based on a TVD of 25,000 ft. from memory)

Since we know the 2,200 psi pressure at the end of the open pipe, one could calculate the sonic flow rate given some upstream flowing pressure.

You seem like you are in the know.

If the well is leaking outside of the casing how would it be less?

That interview was the most informative thing ive ever encountered on Tiger Droppings.
