Thanks for the pics.

I keep hearing that this oil isn't as thick and won't wash up that dark black tarish substance. Supposedly it is Sweet crude and the other one was something else.

Is this true?

LMRP???

is the top half of the stack. it holds all of the accumulator bottles that close the rams

What can be done to shut the BOP?

a believe that they set a new set of bottles on the ocean floor and are trying to activate the rams. apparently, the lmrp was not functioning

dup are you an engineer? Oilfield service business maybe? How do they set these "bottles" on the floor. And how does a BOP get placed on the bottom anyway?

What is the deepest that people can dive? Apparantly not this deep ... but how deep?

is it just me or is the sheen (which I think is the dark area around the light area) extending much further south than forecast?

i have seen bumble bees come out to the rig. these are subs that are contoured to the human body with bionic arms. the diver actually gets inside them like a suit of armor. but, i'm not sure how deep they can go either.

I saw on the net 2300 ft is max depth for a diver in a hard suit.

I've read where they've talked here about needing more torque to turn whatever it is they need to turn ... is this just done with the bigger equipment that some poster had just sent (was it dup?)????

when you activate the lever, the accumulator bottle on the lmrp engage. i assume that, since they removed the lmrp, that the lmrp bottles were malfunctioning.

This is the actual BOP down on the well. The upper assembly, with the shiny stainless panel, is the LMRP, Lower Marine Riser Package.

The lower assembly, with the yellow cylinders, are the rams.

Above the LMRP is a connection called a flex joint that allows the riser going to the surface to move slightly while connected to the BOP.

Underneath the BOP, there is the wellhead connector.

There are at least four ROV vessels on top of this wellhead. I believe each vessel has two ROV's.

There is and has been alot of work going on with trying to shut the BOP rams.

More assets are moving to the field to assist and go to a Plan B if you will. Reference an earlier poster regarding a large torque tool.

SkyTruth is now estimating that Exxon Valdez has been surpassed... calculating a spill volume of 26000 bbl/day based on April 28's overflight map.

When they changed the estimate of daily spillage a few days ago I didn't think it would long.

I would take this with a grain of salt. The overflight map doesn't really tell you that much.

The oil on the surface will continue to spread, it is wind and current driven. However size is not important, it is density on the surface and whether the sheen is a light skimming or actual thick sludge.

Its bad, but I don't know how much you can really tell from a satellite as far as the amount of oil. Just determines the size of the footprint

Maybe it's just me, but does the MODIS imagery of the spill eerily resemble Lucifer in a Batman Mask?

I know i'm operating on less than 3 hrs. sleep in the past 72, but geez........
