alot of ppl didn't pick up on this. Alot fo the sacks actually wasn't the lines fault. JJ created them himself by dropping so deep that he wasn't even in the pocket.

Get rid of the ball, take his eyes off the #1 receiver, when he gets a play call into his helmet that is absolutely asinine - pretend like the microphone in his helmet is broken and throw a 8-10 yd out route to the sideline.

More confidence in his ability to get the ball in tighter spots.

Catch up to the speed of the game. Its way past his level at this point. If JJ can catch up to the game and develop confidence he can be very good.

Snap the ball before 1 or 2 seconds on the clock = not allowing the d-line to get the same jump on our guys

I think he needs to work on progression, getting the ball the hell out, accuracy, and non-suckiness

Yeah, other than the 5 shortcomings you mention, he might be a serviceable quarterback.

Some of the things you mention as being critical are more natural skills than taught, coupled with Crowton's apparent inability to develop QB's, is why I continue to lack confidence in our offense.

Mechanics

An assistant coach for a team we played very early last season stated that JJ had very poor mechanics. During their off week, very late in the season, he had a chance to, once again, see JJ. He then stated that JJ's mechanics had shown no improvement at all.

As I watch clips of this year's spring practices, I see the respective coaches working, one on one, with the OL's, DL's, WR's & DB's fundamentals.

I've seen no one working, one on one, w/ the QBs.

Perhaps it's happening and the clips I've seen don't show it. IMO, I think it's clear that JJ could use some improvement in that area.

We all know JJ has areas of improvement, I think its possible to be constructive about the criticism

The most important thing is to step up in the pocket and not drop back too far to where the DEs sack him with ease. Some of this is the OL reponsibility, but if he can step up in the pockt and buy himself a few extra seconds, I can assure you either Randle, Tolliver, or Shepard will be open.

Quick passes, and I believe this falls on the coaches. JJ Needs to get rid of the ball faster and the reason I say this falls on the coaches is because they need to work on this in practice and Crowton needs to call plays that allows Jefferson to get rid of the ball quickly, and stop calling plays where routes take forever to run.

I also believe Jefferson is a great scrambler, I think his running ability should be used a little more - but dear god NOT running an option. He is great running designed QB draws, yet we've rarely seen that play this year, but how many times did we run the option with him? Coaching.

I think Jefferson's development is mostly on the coaches from working on his timing to calling plays that suits his strengths. The positive thing is if he's properly coached, Jefferson can be a fantastic QB, the negative thing is that he needs proper coaching and I have zero faith in Crowton and my faith in Miles is falling.

quote:

Screens/Bubble screens: This used to be the staple play for LSU QBs but with JJ, the timing seems off almost making it a negative play. Not an easy throw to make

First off, I disagree - screen passes should be the easiest passes a QB can make. But thats not the point....Does anyone else find it strange that neither of our first two string QBs cannot throw screen passes? Matt Flynn had no trouble throwing screen passes, although he was mostly coached by Fisher, and in 2007 we ran tons of successful screen passes. Come to think of it, I haven't seen many screen passes at all lately. So the question is, why does Jefferson and Lee, our two veteran QBs, have such trouble throwing screen passes while pretty much every other offense in college football can execute a screen pass?

Sense of urgency!!

More tempo in every aspect...getting to the huddle, calling the play, at the line of scrimmage, making his reads, delivering the ball. He is sooooo slow in everything he does. If he could improve that, we would be in much better shape. Sadly, I'm afraid it's just who he is though.

I see some good stuff in this thread, but if I had to pick just one it would be this:

"step into the pocket so his blockers can maintain the pocket"

I know his protection was not always good last year but if JJ improves in this one area, he buys time to let the ball go more often than not.

1A would be getting rid of the ball ON TIME.

I'd like to see him line up with >10 seconds to go on the play clock and take a look at the scheme he is facing and make adjustments. Don't typical teams call in two or three plays and the decision is made by the qb which one to go with at the l.o.s? Did this happen much last season? Seems like I could figure out which play they were running 50% of the time..and I don't know shite about football..if JJ can't fool me then how in the hell is he going to fool Fla/Ala/Miss St/ULM?? If he could generate some confusion in the opponent then I think alot of his short comings can be compensated for..

have to start out with this...b/c its not all about being taught by a coach...you have to have the right type of kid from the beginning...

situational awareness...

is critical, I believe its one of the those "natural skills" along with "thinking faster" make faster reads, have the ability to check down multiple WR's, know who my read player is if Def's audible.
quote:

Leadership

is earned, not given by title, for those guys to follow him he's gonna have to do something special, game winning drive, etc.
quote:

maturity

Not fair that he had to play as a freshman, but hey, lifes not fair, deal with it. grow up.
quote:

get rid of the pouty face
talk to media like he is the leader of offense not like mumbling kid

again, its hard for the team to follow him if he cant control himself first...No More excuses, he's a Jr now, upperclassman. His ball sack has to drop.
Now for the things he can correct with coaching.
1. Step up in the pocket, lines form those for the QB for a reason, to be able to step into his throw.
2. step towards where your throwing it and push off with back leg, dont let you front side fly out. (less accuracy)
3. hit runners in stride, give our WR's the ability to catch on the run, 3 5* WR's are waiting on this. post, fly patterns, across patterns
4. learn touch for screen and bubble screens, JR was great at this.
5. Accuracy possibly the most important thing.
6. shorten your release
7. learn the offense, dont limit what we can do, it gives opposing defense less to read and prepare for.
8. LET IT HAPPEN and RELAX!
9. throw the deep ball with accuracy
10. Get timing down with WR's
11. Watch your play clock
12. Damn this is lot of s**t, do we have anyone else?...we ought to make a thread of pros and cons and see which one is longer...

Basically needs to improve in every facet of the game if he wants to truly be successful as an SEC quarterback. Showed flashes at times based solely on athletic ability; not really showing much in terms of being a true quarterback (at least on a consistent basis). That being said, apparently thats who we've got to work with and Coach Miles has already said he's the starter, so I hope he does well.

agree, and i wish him the best of luck, regardless of opinoins were counting on him to be successful.
