Cab driver/former NBA Comeback Player of the Year John Drew

Yesterday I took a cab from downtown Houston to Hobby Airport. My cab driver was John Drew, who played for the Hawks and the Jazz in the '70s and '80s. He averaged 20 ppg over his career, holds a tied record with Jason Kidd for most turnovers in a game, was on the all rookie team, and earned comeback player of the year honors after he returned from a stint in rehab for cocaine addiction per his wikipedia page. He told me he was from New Orleans and had considered going to LSU or Tulane, but his wikipedia page says he's from Alabama. He also told me that instead of the LSU, he "went to North Carolina." I took that to mean UNC, but it appears he went to Gardner-Webb (also in N.C.).
Wikipedia says that he was banned from the NBA for substance abuse. Seemed like a really nice and good natured guy. Anyone know if he ever lived in New Orleans?

quote:I checked his stats on NBA.com. I spoke with him personally. I checked wikipedia, and looked at the authorities linked to that site. I'm not planning on publishing an authoritative summary of my findings. I think that's all I need to do.

Besides that, I was posting to see if anyone knew if he was BS--ing me about being from New Orleans.

Speaking of former cocaine addicted NBA players from the '80s, I saw former Rockets guard Mitchell Wiggins at Buffalo Grille on Bissonnet. I'm probably the only person in his early 20s who'd recognize him.

Drew could fill it up. A very good player in the day.
