Tax Refund Checks = Used Car

People are cashing tax refund checks like crazy this week at the bank. 95% of them deposit $10 in their account and are taking the cash to buy a used car. Happens every year

My point is I find it sad that every year I see the same people who spend every cent on a car that won't last 12 months. How good can a $4k used car be anyway?

I bought a 1997 Nissan pickup in 1999 for about 10K. Paid it off in 3 years, sold it in 2005, like a dumbass, for $3500, and bought a new car.
Ran into the guy I sold it to TODAY, he said he still drives it to work 2 days a week to save miles on his "nice truck." He said the only thing he's replaced are the brake pads and a tail light.

I'm a Probation officer and I deal with this shite constantly. Rather than do something useful with their free money, they almost instantly blow it on something useless. They buy POS cars that fail in no time and then take the bus for the rest of the year.
There is no cure for stupid.

Guys be easy. I know what you mean but at least they are trying to live within their means. People just need to take their time to purchase, the problem isn't looking for a 4k car, the problem is looking for it in a rush and at a dealer. I'm fresh out of college and I'm sure Ford or whoever would love to sign me up for a 16k car. But I found my wife a 50k mile $3800 buick (2001) from an old lady in Los Angeles. Everyone doesn't have the income you guys have. You need a reliable car to get to work but seriously I'll pocket the exrta 6k plus interest Ford wanted for a fricking Focus with 40k. As always it is a individual case by case basis.

Oh and seriously with all the taxes all of us pay, it's not free unless you're a well fare case.

Who gets $4k back? I'm thinking they are getting $1,500.
TD.com has a six-figure minimum you have to meet to get an account.
I agree there are plenty of people out there with bad luck who can't buy a vehicle until they get their refund. However, there is also a large group that can't manage their life, money, and priorities for shite.
Go read the book Scratch Beginnings some time. As an experiment, some dude hopped off a bus in some city one time with no money in his pocket. He walked to a homeless shelter, started doing day labor, and a year later was doing pretty well.

You're not making any sense. I used to be a teller once upon a time and the people who weren't depositing the full amounts were people without accounts that were cashing the checks. Why would they even bother going to the bank when most used car dealers will take their rebate check.

The ones I can't understand is those that buy a $4,000 dollar car that mechanically wont last a year, but then put in a $4,000 sound system, some rims, tint, and lots of other extras, why not just spend the money on a car that you can depend on?

I'm seeing H&R Block debit cards. They are opening accounts so they can use the debit card for free. Then taking out $300 at a time (which is the limit). There is a line at the fricking ATM. A very very dark line.

Because they want a car that they can depend on...to lure the ladies.

I see you are confusing the word extras with necessities.

I fricking despise a system that will let someone who has paid $212 in income tax get a check back for $4000

Happens all the time. Not everyone NEEDS a $30K vehicle.

I have saw some come in with refunds of over 6K

A majority of people are using their Tax Refund money as a down payment at a "Rent to Own" lot rather than buying the car outright. So they are buying a $6,000 to $8,000 car (Depending on the down payment) at 25% intrest or more (I think the legal limit is 36% intrest not sure). The car lots usually finance the cars to the customers for 2-3 years. Most are not putting $4,000 down more like $1,500 to $2,500. But, it is sad how much they actually get back and how quickly the blow it.

I'm in banking and have a few used car lots in my book of business....these guys have been bringing in $20K in cash in everyday for the last 2 weeks! Simply amazing.
