Did anyone watch the Pitt game? Cincy's D is BAD. If ND takes Kelly, ND will have a top notch offense (already have a good one) and a piss poor defense (if it is anything like Kelly's current team).

If I was a ND fan, I would want a top defensive coach. If they go with Kelly, they better put up big $ to get a top DC.

Well, I didn't know about Cincy losing 9 defensive starters. But he is responsible for recruiting and filling those spots, right? Did they have a good defense last year? Does Kelly normally have good defenses?

My observation was based primarily on the Pitt game in which they could not stop a solid running game. Kelly has been at Cincy long enough to be responsible for the team he puts ont he field.

I am actually not a ND fan, so I'm ok with them continuing to have a weak defense. A soft defense = a soft team.

They were #25 in scoring D last year.

Yeah its Kelly's job to recruit, but not even great defensive coaches can overcome losing 9 starters. See Pete Carroll 08 -> 09

Kelly is also a proven HC. Has coaches on the college level his entire career, and has has connections to the midwest.

All of those are reasons he's better than Weis

yeah, but in 07 floridas defense wasn't that good becuase they lost so many players from the year before. next year they will be in the same situaion. anytime you lose that many starters you are going to have problems. also, i want to say that 2 of Cincy's db's from last year got drafted.

Again the best example is USC this year. Pete Carroll has undeniably recruited his arse off and is a proven Defensive coach at the college level. He loses 9 guys and his offense gets bombed.

All good points.

But are the midwest connections that important? When ND was a power, they pulled from across the nation. Perhaps focusing on the regional talent is the correct course for them now.

Again, if I am a ND fan, after enduring years of good offenses and poor defenses, I want a solid defense. Perhaps Kelly can bring that to ND and get the flow of talent going so he doesnt' have a crap defense every 2-3 years.

ND needs to recruit nationally to return to what they were, but Kelly having ties to one party of the nation that is a good geographical fit gives you a base as you begin rebuilding the program's image

I think the issue is more that after a parade of failure that you bring in a guy who wins. Say what you want about Kelly, but he's won everywhere he's gone. At ND he can play an easier schedule than Cinci played this year on a regular basis.

So what if they had a weak defense their undefeated and they has as least as difficult as ND. Wies was 6-6....... 12-0>6-6..... basically he got twice the product out of cinn.'s reasource that wies got out of notre dames. This is a lot better.

Almost always upstart teams from non tradition powers make hay with offense not defence (Boise st., Houston this year, byu in the 80's, Utah etc.). Defense is more athelete dependent. It's much easier to overcome a talent drop off with a good scheme an smart play on offence. Kelly played line backer an started his coaching carreer on the defensive side of the ball.

Honestly I could careless about Kelley, I think he is a good coach and whoever gets him will be lucky but who knows till it happens. But to say he does not have a significantly better resume (as college head coach) than Wies is not very realistic.

I'm not defending Weis. My point is that if you are a ND fan, wouldn't you want someone to bring a defensive scheme/approach that will allow you to shut down teams (especially the teams on ND's schedule)?

What I saw from Cincy this year was a powerful offense and a crap defense. I'll give the guy credit for going 11-0. My point, again was from the perspective of a ND fan, wouldn't you want a solid defense. Maybe Kelly comes in and with ND's resources is able to field a solid defense.

If he does not, what do you have but another Weis?

If I'm ND, I could care less about offense or defense, I just want to win and that's what Kelly knows how to do.

Kelly has won at 3 different places as a HC. He was a missed FG by TX from being in the title game as Cincy's coach. He would be a very good choice for ND.
