IMHO both should be in the Hall of Fame, but if it were up to me based on my own opinion I would choose Dale Murphy first. Hopefully in the near future both of these guys along with Pete Rose will all make it to the Hall of Fame.

The Braves really sucked back then. They were real bad. They'd make the west coast swing through San Diego, LA, and san Fran and come back 3-9 or 2-10 and they were in the Western Division. The Hawk had better players around him

Andre was better then Dale IMO.

The thing that no one remembers is that Murphy came into the bigs as the best catcher prospect since Johhny Bench. Yet he was gifted enough to win Gold Gloves in centerfield. He was a truly gifted player and should be in the HOF.

Murphy was good but just a little short of Hall of Fame.

Dawson won his MVP on a last place team.

Cubs had a winning record twice in the 80's, and Dawson was only on one of those teams (1989)

the Braves won their division once in the 80s and finished second twice, and overall had 3 seasons of over .500 ball and another season where they went 80-82

Dawson wasnt even the best player on the cubs while he was with them, Ryne Sandberg was.

Dale Murphy was Mr. Brave for about 14 years and nobody else was even close.

14 years?

lol

he was maybe the best Brave on the team for 6-7 years.

the rest of the years are arguable

a few years he was, but thats irrelevant anyway.

compile each teams record in the 80's and id bet they are similar.

Who gives a frick about Dawson.

This isn't a thread that asks whether one goes in and one stays out. It is about Dale Murphy.

And, the truth is, Dale Murphy deserves to be in the Hall. He was a top 5 player in HIS ERA of Major League Baseball. That is the standard for getting in the Hall.

The era is from probably 1980 to the late 80s (1987/1988).

And I really do think so? Who else was good in that era, at least from a position player perspective.

Schmidt
Rice
Brett
Ripken
Boggs
Winfield
Sandberg
Gywnn

Don't know if I am missing any others...

Murphy played 18 seasons, and he was really good for about 5 of them. Which is why he isnt in the hall of fame right now.

Rickey Henderson
Robin Yount
Eddie Murray
Ozzie Smith
Gary Carter
Paul Molitor

other guys in the HOF. Their bodies of work span longer than just 5 years.

The years Murphy won the MVP the Braves werent awful. They finished first in the West, lost to the Cards in the NLCS. The '83 year they finished 2nd to the Dodgers. So to say he was surrounded by awful players is misleading.

The Braves lineup those years were:
Lineras
Rameriz
Hubbard
Horner
Niekro

All of with the exception of Rufino Lineras made the All Star game within a 5 years span.

I disagree. He was good from about 1980 to 1988 or so..that's nearly a decade. And in that time span he was probably consistently the best player in the NL.

good isnt the same as really good

82-85, 1987. Really good.

after 1987 he didnt hit over .245 in any year in almost 5 seasons

"If you could improve Andre Dawson, he would be Dale Murphy." - Jerry Royster

"He's one of the toughest guys I've ever pitched to" - Nolan Ryan

"If you can't be impressed by Murph, you can't be impressed. What really impresses me is how he started out as a catcher a few years back and ends up in center field with a Gold Glove. You've got to appreciate that kind of talent." - Andre Dawson

"I can't imagine Joe DiMaggio was a better all-around player than Dale Murphy." - Nolan Ryan

"You can put him in a class with a Mays and an Aaron because he can beat you with his glove, and he can beat you with a home run." - Joe Torre

"I've never known anyone like him. God only makes one like Dale every 50 years." - Chuck Tanner

"I don't challenge Murphy, even if he's 0 for 20. Not him, not ever." - Mario Soto

"I'd say he is probably the best all-around player in either league, probably the most valuable . . . in baseball right now." - Hank Aaron, in 1982

accurate, but only for 2 years. Which is why he isnt in the hall. If he maintained his peak even for 2-3 more years, he'd would have been in years ago
