I posted this in the other thread, but that thread is so long it's buried way down.

quote:

Mr. XXXXX,

Thank you for writing. The LSU Athletic Department greatly values the band and its contributions to LSU. In fact, the Athletic Department provides more financial support to its band than any other school in the Southeastern Conference, spending over $900,000 annually in travel, salaries and equipment for the Tiger Band. And the Athletic Department has also committed $4.5 million to the construction of a new band hall, making LSU Athletics the single largest contributor to that project.

So there is no doubting our continued commitment to the LSU band. However, these are trying financial times and there are cost-cutting measures being taken all over the LSU campus. The travel for the band just happens to be one of the more high profile cost-saving areas. Difficult decisions have to be made in difficult times, and LSU is indeed going through some very difficult financial times right now. As state budget cuts have slashed higher education budgets all over Louisiana, the athletic department has been called upon to provide more financial assistance to our University this year than ever before. So we have had to take a hard look at every dollar we spend.

The Tiger Band will continue to be a very big part of LSU Football, but during the 2009 season a pep band will not travel to our game at the University of Washington and the full band will not travel to any regular season road game, resulting in a savings of $125,000 to $150,000 this year.

Thank you for your support of the Tigers,

Herb Vincent

Sr. Associate Athletic Director

LSU

Mr. Vincent,

Reasonable enough, although I highly object to this particular budget cut when in November 2008 you just spent over $7 million on LED video boards for many of our venues, including the natatorium and tennis courts. That said, it is what it is and I see both sides of the issue, but now we have to fix the problem. Thus ...

How do we - as fans - go about paying to get a pep band to Seattle and the full band to either Tuscaloosa or Oxford or Starkville? We are certianly willing to create a website accepting donations, and from our calculations it is estimated that it would cost about $50,000 to send a 50-member pep band to Seattle, and certainly much less than that to bus the full band to Alabama, Ole Miss, or Mississippi State and back to Baton Rouge immediately following the game.

If you guys won't budget this in as many fans including myself believe you should have done initially when you scheduled this game in Washington, we as fans will do everything within our power to pay for this. We may or may not be successful, but at least we will give it our best shot.

One thing that I think you guys could do to help is to send out an email to all LSU fans that have bought tickets through LSU for the Washington game. I don't know how you want to word it, but simply let them know about the situation and that we are trying to get donations for a pep band to Washington. I think this is a very logical solution. If we get 10,000 fans giving $5 each, that should just about cover the expenses to send a pep band to Washington. Many fans I have interacted with are willing to donate more than that, up to $100. If we had only 500 people giving $100, that would cover it as well.

Let's say we bring a 50-person pep band:

Flight $500 x 50 = $25,000
15 Hotel Rooms for 2 nights ... $240 (120/nt) x 15 = $3600
Bus transportation for the weekend = $5000
Food ($15/meal for 9 meals for 50) = $6750
Contingency: $5000
-----------------------------------------------

TOTAL: $45,350

Thanks for all your help in this matter. Hopefully we can find a way - working together - to get the pep band to Washington and the full band to one SEC road game in 2009. And although this issue does upset me as an LSU fan, I truly do appreciate you taking the time to respond to my email. I understand your job is not an easy one and that all of you work very hard for LSU.

Thanks,

They should just cut the band altogether. It's not like they can't just play the music piped in. They can turn around and sell those seats plus there won't be any more expenditures on the band. Imagine the savings to the LSU Athletic Department. Then they can charge a fee for people that want to form a tunnel for the football team to run through.
We should become just like Tulane back in the 70's-90's.

Email Herb/Linda or whoever would come up with the budget to get 50 or so to Seattle and see if they'd run an estimate. If its around 50k I think the money could be raised.

ETA: Hell even if its 15-20 of them...something to just lead the cheers...

Low blow, IMO.

How do you know it wasn't budgeted years ago when the game was first scheduled? And if they did budget it, circumstances have changed since then. His reply to you was professional and thorough and you replied with a shitty remark.

With your comment above in your response, if I were Vincent, I would not even bother to reply to your most recent message. But he's probably a better man than I am, so maybe he will respond.

I bet if someone asked Les to donate the $50k or so to send the band to Washington or Tuscaloosa he'd do it in a heartbeat.

Solution.

If the AD still wont budge and nothing can be worked out to send the FULL BAND to the Bama game, All GBFTL members should car pool up to Tuscaloosa. It's only about 5 hours up there. Let the AD rent a few vans for the Sousaphones, Bass Drums and whatever other instruments can't fit into cars. Band members do have automobiles don't they?. Just organize a GBFTL caravan.....

Without going all the way thru this thread, did Herb ever respond to your proposal?

Did you give him the idea of a band made of alumni members?

I found out today that I am getting layed off on sept. 25th my birthday no less and I am willing to make a donation surely others will too.

Thanks for all your efforts, hopefully they will atleast consider these options.

allright, guys ... the LSU Tiger Band Fund paypal account is all set up and ready for donations....

I guess Tuesday we'll know for sure if we're a go, but we're just about ready to start scraping up the dollars we need to kick off the season with the Tiger Band in Seattle.

I'll keep everyone posted!

The reason the band can't go to Seattle is because it's in Seattle. If we were playing Texas A&M or another regional team, things might be different.

I for one would rather us play nothing but regional teams and leave the Pac-10 shite for bowl games.

JPLSU1981.. thank you for stirring the pot and emailing Mr. Vincent. I think you will enjoy my email to Mr. Vincent... I know 289 people who will be happy to contribute towards the collection for the band, which I will be happy to pass along to them once WAFB and whoever works out the website. Our website at LINK raised over $20k for our group ticket purchase and PayPal is amazing for getting people to make contributions. Remember the dude who took up a collection for billboards hating on U$C's faux dynasty? We can do this and we WILL get the band to Seattle!

Mr. Vincent,

My name is Paul Hoffman and I'm President of the LSU Alumni chapter in Portland, Oregon, the Rose City Tigers.

Yesterday, we purchased 289 tickets (that's $20,400) from the University of Washington's Group Ticket Sales office on behalf of Northwest LSU Alumni. This is a once in a lifetime chance to see LSU play in our neck of the woods, as LSU has NEVER played a game in Oregon or Washington state.

60 of the tickets we purchased (including my own personal tickets) were requested to be near the LSU band by people who were wiling to take an obstructed view of the field if it meant they could be near our band. They traded a much better view from the upper deck in order to hear the band play loud and clear. It never occurred to us that the band would not make the trip and I'm sure many of them will be quite upset when they hear the news.

We raised $20,000 via PayPal to buy tickets as a group and I would be happy to assist in setting up a similar collection towards getting the band up here for the game. I realize the budget had to be cut, but I agree with the forwarded email below that the band has far greater meaning to LSU fans (especially alumni) than any new fangled scoreboards or whatever fancy new equipment LSU wants to buy. Surely there are other cuts that should be made before touching the band's budget.

The band is truly the very last thing that LSU should cut. During the dark, dark days of Curley Hallman's tenure (which I endured as an undergrad student), the band was all that kept us going. The band starts and finishes every LSU game, as they did my freshman year when we were a dismal 2-9. I get chills from hearing them play each and every song, especially the alma mater. No scoreboard could ever come close to the value the band delivers each and every game.

Please reconsider this decision and allow the alumni and fans to set up a collection for the band. If not the regular travel band, then perhaps band alumni or a pep band? Anything would be better than no band at all. The silence would be deafening.

You can not place a value on how much the band means to LSU fans and alumni, not to mention what it means to current students and the athletes. Only students and alumni know what it means to truly come to know and love LSU, and it could never be the same without the band playing at each and every football game, home and away.

Geaux Tigers,
Paul Hoffman
President, Rose City Tigers LSU Alumni
