Likewise. This is giving me a burning desire to see the movie again.

I'm thinking maybe the director intentionally made the ending ambiguous so that people could simply draw their own conclusions depending on their personalities...it makes everybody happy at the expense of clarity.

Yeah, they do those open interpretation endings a lot.

Interesting twist maybe. Just re-watched said play again, it was a little closer than I remembered. Something I did notice - Kit appears to be out, the moment she runs into Dottie with the ball. Dottie blocked Homeplate, had possesion of the ball & tagged Kit before she could touch home plate - the big collision scene.
(41-42 seconds?)

LINK

BTW, the movie is on Youtube.

They should have ended it just before Kit was going to hit Dottie. Fade directly to black and play a random Journey song.

ChewyDante owned in this thread........Dottie didn't drop the ball.......Kit made the play.

Dottie cared to much about the TEAM to do favors for her envious sister.

In fact the slow motion hand hitting the ground and ball popping out clearly shows this......it wasn't like Dotties just lost grip, Kit let all the anger loose on her sister bobby boucher style.

Yet Dottie & Jimmy Dugan watch "Lovingly" as Kit is carried off in victory?

I'm now conviced Kit was out when she ran into the ball about 3 feet before the Homeplate.

You've got to hold onto the baseball all the way through the play

Having said that Dottie dropped the ball on purpose and I don't see how anybody can argue against that

Yep, I was just thinking I shouldn't have posted that she was out before.

I still agree on that. It just rolled out a little to easy. I think when she saw Kit rounding 3rd instead of stopping, you can see her almost saying/thinking "What are you doing Kit??" She made the decision..

So we neglect the plethora of other circumstances that point to the complete opposite being the case because of this?!

Of course they look "lovingly" on it. Dottie certainly. She sees her sister as the heroin in something that she knew she had worked so hard for. And Dugan because he was acutely aware of the situation between the two of them and was involved when he had to trade Kit away.

She even pulled the old high fastball trick to try and strike her sister out to close the game right after hitting the go ahead score off of her sister at the top of the inning! So it didn't cross her mind then to help her sister when she actually has time to contemplate ramifications but at the plate she all of a sudden decides to throw the game due to some moral epiphany?

C'mon guys.

And seriously, stop responding so I can go to sleep. Or at least wait until tomorrow.

I agree with this.

Like I said a little earlier, when Kit rounded 3rd, instead of holding up as told to, I think Dottie made her decision.

Speaking of Dottie's previous decisions, didn't Dottie make a similiar last second decision to catch that ball & do a split at the same time for the cameraman?

Dottie made the decision when Kit was about to kill herself in the dugout. At that point you can see it in her face. The way the ball rolls out made it seem overtly obvious that it was intentional imo.

Didn't Dottie get run over at the plate much earlier in the movie by the catcher from Racine (or at least a bigger girl from one of the other teams)? I think it was during one of those montages of the girls playing ball.

That shot obviously helps set up the end too.

At what point did she make this conscious decision?

Could have been from after the Reporter dude said he was writing a story on how the league didn't even want Kit, they wanted Dottie. Or it could have been from the scene where Kit gets traded and Dottie gets blamed.

I agree.

The entire undertone to the movie is that Dottie's amazing, but her heart isn't in the game. She wants family, kids, etc.
Kit, on the other hand, isn't as good but wants nothing more than to play her arse off.
